STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Seawolves (11-17, 3-8 CAA) and Tribe (21-11, 7-4 CAA) played into the tenth inning this afternoon as momentum swung back and forth, but ultimately ended on William & Mary, 7-5.
Freshman
Eddie Smink made his second start of the season as the right-hander allowed four runs, struck out three batters, and surrendered six hits over his 4.1 innings pitched.
The first momentum swing was slow, as the Tribe led just 1-0 after the first inning. Soon thereafter the Seawolves responded with a run of their own in the third to tie the game at one on a sacrifice bunt by
Ryan Micheli.
William and Mary would score three runs over the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-1 lead. However, that three-run lead lasted no longer than one more inning.
Momentum swung heavily in Stony Brook's favor in the sixth as the left-hander
Sadier Vicioso got the Seawolves out of a bases-loaded jam to pump up the crowd and team.
The Seawolves started a two-out rally with patience and a bit of luck in the bottom half of the sixth. Matt
Brown-Eiring, Derek
Yalon, and Brett
Paulsen all walked to load the bases for
Matt Miceli. The sophomore reached base on an error by the Tribe, as one run came in, making it 4-2.
Freshman first baseman
Jason Campo continued his hot streak as he drove a two-run single into left field to tie the game at four.
Sadier would get out of another jam in the seventh by striking out his second. It continued pushing the momentum in the Seawolves' favor as the first two batters,
Ryan Micheli and
Evan Giordano led off the inning with two hits.
The Seawolves took their first lead of the game from a sacrifice fly from
Brown-Eiring.
William and Mary would respond quickly in the eighth, tying the game at five leading into the ninth. After six straight innings with a run, the ninth inning was a quick one-two-three for both sides as they approached extras.
JT Raab would begin the tenth as he did the ninth, administering a quick out. Unfortunately, William & Mary began to take back control soon after. The Tribe would score two runs on two hits in the inning, taking a 7-5 lead that they would hold onto to secure a series victory.
