HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – After falling to Hofstra in their second round matchup this afternoon, the Stony Brook softball team bounced back to a 2-1 victory over Elon this evening in eight innings to advance into the next round of the CAA Tournament.
In the pitcher's dual, junior
Mia Haynes outlasted the Elon starter as she tossed a career-high 8.0 innings, allowing one run (earned), and struck out a batter. This was the second complete game by Haynes in the Tournament and leads all starters with 19.1 innings-pitched this week.
Looking to bounce back from the defeat, the Seawolves brought the momentum instantly by scoring the first run of the game. Following the lead-off knock by junior
Alicia Orosco and a fielder's choice that allowed sophomore
Alyssa Costello to take her spot at first, junior
Ashley Jacobson sizzled a ball up the middle to give the Seawolves the 1-0 advantage.
The Phoenix would put the pressure right back on Seawolves, but Haynes stranded two runners in the first inning to keep them at ease. After she retired the Phoenix in-order in the second inning, she came back in the following inning by stranding another two runners on base. However, Elon would get on the board in the fourth by sending a solo home run.
Haynes answered the Elon home run by retiring six of the seven batters she faced during the fifth and sixth inning. The Seawolves would get the winning run to third base in the seventh inning but we're unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
Again, it was the right-hander giving the Seawolves a chance at the plate. Haynes would allow the bases to load in the seventh, but the junior induced a fly ball to send the game to extras.
Wasting no time in extras, Costello led the extra inning off with a double and then advanced to third-base on a sacrifice-bunt by junior
Catherine Anne Kupinski. The Seawolves would take the lead after a pass-ball to senior
Corinne Badger that allowed Costello to score and Stony Brook to take a 2-1 lead.
Haynes would retire the Phoenix in order to seal the victory for the Seawolves.
In the game one defeat to the Pride, Hofstra jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after tallying four runs in the first inning.
Orosco and senior
Brooke Dye got the Seawolves on the board in the third inning by stealing first and third-base to allow Dye to come home.
The Pride would score another run in the third to go up 5-1. But the Seawolves didn't go away quietly as they sent six batters to the plate in the final inning, including the game-tying run. But after Kupinski knocked in senior
Shauna Nuss, the Pride would seal their 5-2 victory.
