STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team has been honored for its relentless effort in the classroom and their academic success as it captured the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence award.
Additionally, graduate students Keenan Fitzmorris and Dean Noll earned individual honors as they collected NABC Honors Court.
"This is a really nice recognition for two elite student-athletes. Both are bright and have high level work ethics which has led to all their successes in the classroom. They represent exactly what we want in our program….guys who are good basketball players that excel in the community and get it done in the classroom." said head coach Geno Ford.
Stony Brook captured the NABC Team Academic Excellence award after earning a cumulative GPA above 3.0 for the 2022-23 academic year. Fitzmorris and Noll took home the individual awards after posting a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
The NABC's academic awards include honorees from all levels of college basketball. Over 1,800 players earned spots on the NABC Honors Court and over 300 programs received NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards for 2022-23.
The two Honors Court recipients for the Seawolves were the third most of any CAA men's basketball program this season. Delaware had the next most Honors Court winners of any CAA school with five, while Hofstra had four, and Northeastern and William & Mary placed one.
Founded in 1927 by the legendary University of Kansas men's basketball coach Forrest "Phog" Allen, the NABC is the nation's largest professional association of basketball coaches and currently claims a membership of nearly 5,000 coaches throughout the ranks of the NCAA, NAIA, USCAA, NCCAA, two-year colleges, high schools and youth programs.
Since its inception, the NABC has also contributed numerous ideas and programs to enhance and preserve college basketball. These initiatives include establishing the original Basketball Hall of Fame (Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame), creating the format for today's NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship, originating the Final Four Fan Fest concept, and launching Coaches vs. Cancer.
