Men's Basketball Unveils 2023-24 Non-Conference Schedule

9/6/2023 2:15:00 PM

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University men's basketball program and head coach Geno Ford announced the 2023-24 non-conference schedule on Thursday afternoon.

Road trips to Michigan State, who advanced to the Sweet 16 a season ago, Nebraska and St. John's highlight the non-conference slate that also features seven home contests, including five in the month of December for Stony Brook.

"We have a super difficult and exciting schedule this season," Ford said. "We will be challenged with several high-level and nationally-recognized opponents. The CAA will be terrific again, so we should be prepared with some extremely tough opponents in tough environments. Our team is excited for the challenges ahead."

The precursor for year two in the CAA tips off on Nov. 7 with a road trip to Queens for an opening-night meeting with St. John's. The Seawolves and the Red Storm meet for the 10th time in program history; Stony Brook will look to earn its first-ever win against the Big East program that revamped its roster after hiring Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame head coach Rick Pitino this summer.

Ford's squad, featuring 10 returners and five newcomers, opens up play at Island Federal Arena on Nov. 10 against St. Joseph's Long Island. The meeting between the two Suffolk County programs will be the eighth all-time; Stony Brook has won every prior meeting, including an 89-49 triumph last season at home, highlighted by one of Tyler Stephenson-Moore's six 20-plus point outings in 2022-23.

The following week, the Seawolves play two midweek road contests at Duquesne and Nebraska as part of the Cornhusker Classic, which wraps up with a home meeting against Rider on Nov. 20. After the Thanksgiving break, Stony Brook hits the road to face Ivy League opponent Yale before the calendar turns over to December.

It will be Stony Brook's first-ever meeting with both Duquesne and Nebraska. It will be the sixth overall meeting between the Seawolves and the Broncs, with Stony Brook having won the previous two matchups.

Stony Brook's busy December starts with a two-week stretch that features four home contests. The four-game homestand begins with a visit from Wagner on Dec. 2, followed by a matchup with Stonehill on Dec. 6. The Seawolves then host Bryant (Dec. 9) and Norfolk State (Dec. 13) before hitting the road for a pair of games leading into Christmas.

The meeting between Stony Brook and Bryant will mark the fourth consecutive season that the two programs meet. The Seawolves last topped the Bulldogs in the 2021-22 season and Bryant owns a 3-1 edge in the overall series. Stony Brook and Wagner face off for the third consecutive season and 11th time overall, with the Seahawks having won seven of the 10 prior contests.

Stony Brook and Stonehill face one another for the first time in 2023-24 and the meeting with Norfolk State will be the fifth in program history. The Seawolves have gotten the better of the Spartans in the last three meetings after losing the first.

The Seawolves face off with Army at West Point on Dec. 17 ahead of a Dec. 21 meeting with Michigan State, the second-ever meeting with the Spartans in program history. The Seawolves are 6-2 all-time against Army and have won four straight over the Black Knights.

Stony Brook closes the non-conference portion of the schedule at home against Brown on Dec. 29. The Seawolves will look to exact revenge against the Ivy League foe, who won last season's matchup. Stony Brook is 5-4 all-time against Brown and have won three of the four games contested on Long Island.

Conference opponents, home and away, were announced in early August. Be sure to stay tuned to all things Stony Brook in regards to dates and times for league play. All in all, Stony Brook will play 16 home games during the 2023-24 campaign.
