Seawolves Dominate on Defensive End; Surge Past Campbell in CAA Opener

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Stony Brook women's basketball held Campbell to just 26.3% from the field and out-scored the Camels by 34 across the final three quarters in a 73-43 triumph at Island Federal Arena on Friday.

The Seawolves (11-1, 1-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Khari Clark, who had 21 points, adding six rebounds and four blocks. Gigi Gonzalez tacked on 17 points and a game-high six assists and Sherese Pittman chipped in as well with 11 points.
 

Stony Brook out-rebounded Campbell 45-33 on Friday, led by nine boards from Shamarla King and eight more from Pittman. The Seawolves grabbed 11 of those boards on the offensive glass, three each coming from King and Pittman.

Stony Brook disrupted Campbell's shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks, with four coming from Clark.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Campbell led after the first quarter at 13-9, and extended that advantage to 17-9 early in the second. However Stony Brook would bounce back, cutting the deficit to 19-16 before exploding on a 14-0 run to take a 30-19 advantage heading into halftime, capped off by a three from Gonzalez.

The Seawolves forced six Campbell turnovers in the second quarter and turned them into 11 points.

Stony Brook extended the run to 20-0 in the third to take a 36-19 lead and force a Campbell timeout just 1:17 into the quarter. The Seawolves maintained a 48-33 lead after the third, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint in the period.

The Seawolves' lead never fell below 15 in the fourth quarter and Stony Brook ended the game on a 12-0 run. The Seawolves shot 9-of-13 (69.2%) in the final period, outscoring the Camels 25-10.
 

GAME NOTES

  • At 11-1, the Seawolves mark their best 12-game start since the 2019-20 season, when they also started 11-1.
  • Stony Brook held its third opponent below 30% shooting this season and fourth opponent below 50 points.
  • The 43 points allowed marked Stony Brook's fewest allowed in a conference matchup as a member of the CAA, and the fewest allowed overall in a conference game Feb. 5, 2022, when Stony Brook allowed just 38 to NJIT while a member of America East.
  • The Seawolves enjoyed a 64-30 scoring advantage over the final 28:06 of the game.
  • The Stony Brook defense forced 16 turnovers, having forced 15 or more in 10 of its 12 games this season.
  • Clark's 21 points notched her third effort of 20 or more points this season.
