Volleyball Falls in Five-Set Battle to North Carolina A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. -The Stony Brook volleyball team took the second and fourth set but ultimately fell in a five-set battle to the North Carolina A&T Aggies on Saturday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium. With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 3-4 in CAA play and 10-7 overall on the season.
 


 
The Seawolves were led by another double-double from Leoni Kunz, who registered 15 kills and 18 digs on the day. Kali Moore also added 20 kills for the offense as Torri Henry dished out a season-high 58 assists to help the attack. On the defensive end, Julia Patsos chipped in with 21 digs.
 
SET 1 | The Seawolves found themselves in an early hole, dropping a tough first set, 25-18. Stony Brook trailed by as many as seven points as N.C. A&T never surrendered the lead having their best offensive set of the day, hitting .500. Quinn Anderson led the Seawolves attack with five kills through the opening frame.
 
SET 2 | Stony Brook responded to pick up a 25-16 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. The Seawolves scored first and never trailed to earn the set victory. Stony Brook opened up as much as a nine-point lead, hitting a match-high .407 over the course of the set. The Stony Brook offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.
 
SET 3 | Stony Brook fell in the third set, putting the Seawolves in a 2-1 deficit. The squad was able to rally back after trailing 10 points but N.C. A&T held on to win the set 25-23. Moore totaled five kills through the set as Kunz, Anderson, Abby Campbell, and Ayanna Pierre Louis boosted the offense with kills of their own.
 
SET 4 | Stony Brook then came back to win set four 25-19 to force a fifth set. A solid showing on the attacking side led the Seawolves to victory. Stony Brook put together a .405 attack percentage with 17 kills in the set win. The Seawolves ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish it out.
 
SET 5 | Stony Brook came up short in a back-and-forth match, winning the second and fourth set and ultimately facing defeating in the deciding set. The Seawolves played out a tight fifth set but couldn't squeak out the win. Stony Brook was able to tie it up at 10-10 before the Aggies took over and won 15-13.

  • Stony Brook had three players in double figures in kills (Moore, Anderson, and Kunz).

"Today was a back-and-forth battle and unfortunately we were on the losing end," stated head coach Kristin Belzung. "I was happy to see us fight back in some tough situations, but we put ourselves behind early too many times. Tomorrow will be another battle, and we need to be ready to fight."
