No. 6 Stony Brook Falls to No. 3 Towson in CAA Quarterfinals

TOWSON, Md. --The Stony Brook volleyball team could not beat a dynamic Towson offense losing in three sets (18-25, 24-26, 17-25) to the Tigers in the CAA Championship Quarterfinals on Thursday evening.
 
The loss dropped Stony Brook's record to 16-13 overall and 9-10 in CAA play to close out the 2024 season.
 
Leoni Kunz and Quinn Anderson both finished with seven kills on the night to lead the Seawolves attack. Defensively, two players reached double figures in digs as Kali Moore tallied 13 and Julia Patsos added 12. Ayanna Pierre Louis collected three blocks to lead Stony Brook at the net.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
SET 1 | The Seawolves dropped a tough first set, 25-18 after trailing by as many as seven points. Towson started with a 4-0 lead before Stony Brook fought their way back on a 5-0 run to take an 8-6 lead behind four straight kills from Abby Campbell, Moore, and Kunz. It then became a back-and-forth battle as the Tigers pieced together 15 kills on .279 hitting while the Seawolves hit .070 with nine kills. Towson took charge at 14-13 and rode that to a first set victory. Moore led through the opening frame with four kills.
 
SET 2 | Stony Brook then lost set two, 26-24, falling two sets behind in the match. The Seawolves hit a team-high .286 with 15 kills as Towson dominated with a match-high .429 hitting on 18 kills. The Tigers took another early lead before Stony Brook clawed back to mark eight ties and three lead changes. The Seawolves found a late opportunity tying it up and then taking the lead off of back-to-back kills from Mercedes Motton and Kunz. A service ace from Rayanne Wheat would give Stony Brook set point before the Tigers found momentum in four straight points to take the second set.
 
SET 3 | Towson finished off the sweep with a third-set 25-17 victory. Stony Brook tallied nine kills on .239 hitting as the Tigers built on their previous match success and added another 18 kills, hitting .256. The Seawolves took the lead to start the set before Towson evened the score at 10-10 going on a 5-0 run to carry themselves through the match and onto the CAA Seminfinals. Pierre Louis collected three kills through the stanza while Kunz and Motton each added a pair.
 
 
STATS AND NOTES

» Leoni Kunz (.103) and Quinn Anderson (.208) both had a team-high seven kills.
» Stony Brook got a team-high 13 digs from Kali Moore, adding six kills, one block, and one assist.
» Stony Brook attackers were helped by a team-high 22 assists from Torri Henry and a team-high two aces in the loss.
