STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University men's basketball team defeated Hampton, 93-73, on Thursday evening at Island Federal Arena. Four scorers finished in double figures, led by 22 from Tyler Stephenson-Moore and a 20-point contribution from Keenan Fitzmorris.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stony Brook had things going early, led offensively by Fitzmorris, who did a majority of his work inside the painted area. Fitzmorris needed just over eight minutes to reach double-digit points, starting off a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to help the Seawolves build an early 18-12 advantage.
The Seawolves' lead grew to double figures down the stretch, followed by a 7-0 run late in the opening half to increase its lead to 41-26. The Seawolves took a 45-32 lead into the half. Stony Brook capitalized on seven Hampton turnovers in the period, turning them into 13 points on the other end of the floor.
Stony Brook continued to pile on points in the second half, using a 12-0 run to open the second half to grow the lead to 57-32.
Stony Brook would cruise the rest of the way, emerging with a 20-point victory to secure its 10th home win of the 2023-24 campaign.
STATS AND NOTES
- Stony Brook earned its 10th home victory of the season, doing so for the third time under head coach Geno Ford and the 11th time in the last 14 seasons. Since the beginning of the 2009-10 season, the Seawolves boast a 155-58 (.728) record at Island Federal Arena.
- Stephenson-Moore finished with a team-high 22 points. He has scored at least 10 points in all but five games so far this season. Stephenson-Moore's eight games with 20 points or more are the most on the team this season.
- Fitzmorris poured in a season-high 20 points. He has now scored in double-figures in 16 games this season, including five of Stony Brook's six home conference contests.
- Toby Onyekonwu contributed 13 points, shooting 4-of-5 from the field and 2-for-3 from three-point range. He also finished a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe.
- Aaron Clarke totaled 11 points, adding a game-high five assists. He has notched double-digit points in 20 of his 25 games played this season. Clarke has amassed double-digit points in nine straight games and 13 of his last 14 contests.
- Andre Snoddy pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, one shy of his season best. He has corralled at least seven rebounds in 16 of his 25 appearances this season and has registered six double-digit rebounding games, the most on the team. He also matched a season high with five assists.
- As a team, the Seawolves shot 64.2% from the floor, shooting better than 60 percent from the field in both halves. The mark stands as Stony Brook's best since shooting a program record 67.6% on against Navy on January 6, 2001.
- Stony Brook piled up 19 assists, the second-best mark as a team this year.
- The Seawolves' 20-point victory is its largest margin of victory over a Division I opponent this season and the largest since topping Miami-Hamilton by 21 points last season.
- Stony Brook moves to a perfect 3-0 all-time against Hampton. Tonight's contest was the Seawolves' first home game against the Pirates.
