Santos Defends 5K Title, Franks Shatters Records on Day One of CAA Indoor Championship

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University men's track and field team wrapped up the first day of competition at the 2024 CAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday. Carlos Santos defended his title in the 5K, while George Franks set two more school records in the 200 and 400-meter events.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Santos won the 5K for the second consecutive year, racing to a 14:03.60 clocking, a meet record. Evan Brennan followed, grabbing third place with a season-best 14:05.35 clocking.
  • Franks posted times of 21.26 and 47.42 in the 200 and 400-meter events, respectively, advancing to the finals for both events. Both times broke school records.
  • Collin Gilstrap ran a 4:13.63 mile, advancing to the finals, set for tomorrow.
  • The Seawolves' distance medley relay team (Thomas Burfeind, David Onovo, Fernando Diaz and Henry Gartner) scored points, finishing fifth (10:31.78).

"We had a good first day, achieving most of what we set out to achieve. George had a super day, two school records while advancing to the finals tomorrow," head coach Andy Ronan noted. "The 5K guys and girls competed very well. Both DMR relays scoring was a nice bonus too. Now time to recover and get back at it tomorrow."
