Softball Secures Power 5 Win, Downing Ohio State in Season-Opening Weekend

MIAMI, Fla. - The Stony Brook softball team split a pair of contests on opening day at the Felsberg Invitational in Miami, knocking off Ohio State in game two. The Seawolves upended the Buckeyes, 7-5, behind a complete-game effort from senior transfer Gabrielle Maday in her Stony Brook debut. The win marks the second straight season that the Seawolves picked off a Power 5 opponent.

GAME 1: SEMO 7 - STONY BROOK 5
  • Corinne Badger opened the scoring for Stony Brook with a solo homer in the top of the second.
  • The Seawolves added four more runs in the top of the seventh inning when pinch hitter Naiah Ackerman opened the scoring with a single that brought home Julianna Sanzone.
  • Sofia Chambers plated another run with a single that brought around Madelyn Stepski. Alyssa Costello produced a run-scoring ground out that scored Chambers for Stony Brook's fourth run of the seventh inning.
  • Kyra McFarland and Sanzone each tallied two hits apiece for the Seawolves. McFarland went 2-for-4 at the plate while Sanzone went 2-for-3 at the dish.
  • Mia Haynes made the start in the season opener. She tossed five innings, tallying four strikeouts.
  • Ashton Melaas entered in relief in the sixth inning, allowing a pair of unearned runs to score.

GAME 2: STONY BROOK 7 - OHIO STATE 5
  • Maday tossed a complete game, scattering seven hits and allowing five runs. Despite not registering a strikeout, Maday produced big outs to strand six runners. She set down 11 of the final 13 batters she faced after the Seawolves put up a six-spot in the third inning to take a 7-3 lead.
  • The Seawolves opened the scoring in the second inning on an Alicia Orosco single. The two-out single with the bases loaded plated Brooke Dye.
  • The Buckeyes tied the contest in the following half inning, taking a 3-1 lead on a two-out, two-run single.
  • The Seawolves responded with a six-run outburst in the bottom of the third, batting around in the inning.
  • Badger started things with a triple down the left-field line to plate Costello, who walked to begin the frame. Badger came around to score on Catherine Anne Kupinski's single, tying the game at three.
  • Sanzone drew a base on balls, forcing Ohio State to make a pitching change. The Seawolves loaded the bases after a sacrifice bunt and a four-pitch walk, then saw two runners score without a ball being put in play (hit by pitch, base on balls).
  • Following another Buckeye pitching change, McFarland tacked on a pair of insurance runs with a single into center.
  • Staked to a four-run advantage, Maday was tagged for two more runs in the sixth inning, but retired the side in order in the seventh to close out her first win as a Seawolf.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We played a complete game to beat Ohio State — great pitching, defense and offensive approach," head coach Megan T. Bryant noted. "We were able to generate and keep momentum and our composure. It's a good team win and a terrific response after the first game of the day".
