Stony Brook falls to Towson in OT at Island Federal Arena

STONY BROOK, N.Y. --The Stony Brook women's basketball team fell to the Towson Tigers 83-78 in overtime at home on Friday night. 
 

The Seawolves (18-3, 8-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Khari Clark, who had 23 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Gigi Gonzalez tacked on 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals and Sherese Pittman chipped in as well with 17 points, six rebounds and three steals.

Clark pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Stony Brook, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points. Stony Brook forced 20 Towson turnovers while committing 18 themselves in Friday's game. The Seawolves turned those takeaways into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Clark's three steals led the way for Stony Brook.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

After falling behind 13-9, Stony Brook went on a 5-0 run with 1:32 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Gonzalez, to take a 14-13 lead. The Seawolves then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 15-14. After Towson took a 19-16 advantage, Stony Brook went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Pittman, to take a 23-19 lead. The Tigers then back to take a 34-33 lead heading into halftime.
 

The Tigers continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 37-33 advantage before Stony Brook went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Pittman, to grab a 38-37 lead with 6:31 to go in the third. Towson responded to seize a 53-48 lead entering the fourth quarter. Stony Brook played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint, led by Pittman with seven.

Stony Brook narrowed its deficit to 58-55 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Victoria Keenan's three, to seize a 60-58 lead with 6:00 to go in the fourth. With just .38 seconds left, Clark gave the Seawolves the 71-69 after her turnaround jump-shot. The Tigers then fought back to even things up at 71-71 and send the game to overtime. Stony Brook took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 23 points in the paint.
 

Ultimately, Towson then took advantage in overtime and won 83-78.

The Seawolves will return to the court on Sunday, Feb. 11th as they head to Boston to face off against Northeastern University. This will be the first of two meetings against the Huskies this year. In their last meeting on March 10, 2023, Northeastern defeated Stony Brook 85-68 in Mass.
