MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The Stony Brook University softball team took a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed en route to an 8-4 win against Charleston on Saturday.
Senior Ashton Melaas picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Stony Brook. The right-hander went four shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing three walks and striking out two.
At the plate, the Seawolves were paced by senior Corinne Badger, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a home run and two RBI and junior Emily Reinstein put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Senior Catherine Anee Kupinski also chipped in for Stony Brook, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a triple.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Seawolves got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning on a Julianna Sanzone double to left-center.
- Stony Brook's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Reinstein.
- Badger plated a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Alicia Orosco beat out a grounder to first to bring home the fifth run of the first frame.
- The Seawolves added two more runs in the second, with the first coming after Naiah Ackerman reached on a throwing error that allowed Kupinski to score.
- Stony Brook picked up another run on an RBI double from Reinstein, which pushed the Seawolves' lead to 7-0.
- Charleston narrowed Stony Brook's lead to 7-4 before the Seawolves stretched the advantage to 8-4 in the seventh inning.
- The Seawolves added a run on Badger's two-out, solo homer to left field.
STATS AND NOTES
- Five Seawolves had multiple hits in the ballgame.
- Stony Brook went 4-for-13 (.308) with runners in scoring position.
- Reinstein notched her third multi-hit game of the season and her first multiple-RBI performance. Two of Reinstein's multi-hit games have come during conference play.
- Badger hit her third home run of the season.
- Gabrielle Maday started the contest, tossing three innings and allowing four runs on five hits.
- Melaas entered in relief, throwing four scoreless innings and allowing just one hit. She walked three and struck out one, picking up her second victory of the season.
