Seawolves Sweep George Mason Behind Strong Pitching Performances

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Stony Brook University softball team swept George Mason on Saturday afternoon in Virginia. Naiah Ackerman tallied three RBIs in the game one win and Mia Haynes struck out nine in the nightcap to secure the sweep for the Seawolves.

GAME 1: STONY BROOK 4 - GEORGE MASON 3
  • Gabrielle Maday started for Stony Brook in game one, working around a pair of first-inning singles to start with a scoreless frame.
  • Kyra McFarland reached safely on a bunt and stole second, but was left in scoring position in the top half of the first inning.
  • After the Seawolves were retired in order in the second, Maday allowed a run on a two-out single.
  • Stony Brook went down in order again in the third, but Alyssa Costello snapped a streak of seven straight retired, leading off the fifth with a triple. Catherine Anne Kupinski promptly tied the game, driving in Costello with a single.
  • Ackerman plated a run with a two-out single, scoring Kupinski to put Stony Brook in front in the fifth.
  • Maday worked around an error in the fourth and fifth, protecting Stony Brook's lead.
  • Ackerman came up clutch again, providing insurance with a two-out, two-run single in the sixth to score Kupinski and Julianna Sanzone.
  • Maday allowed two unearned runs in the sixth after a pair of errors defensively, but stranded the tying run in scoring position to get through the sixth.
  • Stony Brook loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, primed to add a cushion to its one-run lead, but the Patriots escaped the jam courtesy of back-to-back strikeouts.
  • After setting down the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh, Maday allowed back-to-back singles and gave way to Ashton Melaas. Another single loaded the bases, but Melaas closed the door with a swinging strikeout to secure a save and a win in game one.

GAME 2: STONY BROOK 5 - GEORGE MASON 3
  • The Seawolves did all of their damage offensively in the first inning of game two, putting up a five spot to kick things off. Four of the five runs were unearned after George Mason committed two errors in the frame.
  • The first run came around to score after Kupinski reached on a throwing error. Sanzone pushed across the second with a groundout and an Emily Reinstein single plated the third run.
  • Brooke Dye brought two more around to score after reaching on the Patriots' second throwing error of the opening frame.
  • Mia Haynes allowed a run in the bottom half of the inning but settled in and retired the side in order in the second and third innings. She worked around singles in the fourth and fifth and a walk in the sixth to keep George Mason off the board for a fifth consecutive frame.
  • Haynes ran into trouble in the seventh, allowing two runs after back-to-back extra-base hits by the Patriots. Melaas entered in relief and again closed the door, retiring the two batters she faced to complete the sweep for the Seawolves.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We competed well and put together two good wins. Our pitchers led the way and were so effective and efficient, allowing only one free base over two games and getting big strikeouts," head coach Megan T. Bryant said. "Ashton was terrific closing both games. We want to build off today and continue to improve as a team."
