Late Push Falls Just Short as Softball Falls to Delaware

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University softball team fell just short of a comeback victory in the series finale against Delaware on Sunday at University Field. For the second straight game Stony Brook brought the winning run to the plate facing its final out, but again came up just short in a 4-3 loss to the preseason CAA favorite, Delaware.

Mia Haynes started and took the loss in the circle for Stony Brook, allowing four runs on six hits across her three-plus innings of work. Gabrielle Maday was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going four shutout innings while allowing two hits and not allowing a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Delaware, as they had done in games one and two, started the scoring early on. The Blue Hens took a 1-0 lead, tallying three singles and a base on balls in the opening frame. Haynes stranded a pair of runners in scoring position, securing the final two outs to keep the deficit from growing any larger.
  • The Blue Hens added to their lead on a two-run shot down the left-field line in the second inning.
  • A solo homer to lead off the fourth frame padded Delaware's lead and forced Haynes out of the ball game.
  • The Seawolves got on the board courtesy of a Catherine Anne Kupinski solo homer in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Maday did well to keep Delaware at bay, allowing two hits over her four innings of relief work to set up the offense with a chance to come back.
  • After two quick outs, Corinne Badger drew a walk and Alicia Orosco singled, her third hit of the day, to bring the tying run to the plate. Kyra McFarland singled down the line, plating both Badger and Orosco to make it a one-run game. Delaware's Winburn beared down to secure the final out and complete the sweep, however.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Really tough ball game today to complete a tough series. Delaware's a good team in all three parts of their game, but in all three games we had an opportunity to win it," head coach Megan T. Bryant said. "We will go back to work this week."
