STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook softball team won a nailbiter on Saturday, defeating Towson, 4-2, at University Field.
Gabrielle Maday earned the win, throwing 6.1 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits, allowing two walks and striking out two.
Alyssa Costello plated a pair of runs with a two-out triple in the fourth, proving to be the difference in the Seawolves' two-run victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After three scoreless innings, the Seawolves broke through with a four-spot in the fourth frame. Singles from Naiah Ackerman and Brooke Dye put runners on the corners with one out. Corinne Badger singled home Ackerman to open the scoring.
- Kyra McFarland reached on an error with two outs, allowing another run to come across before Costello blasted a triple off the fence in right to push another pair of runs across. Towson went to the pen to secure the final out of the inning and stop the bleeding.
- Towson scratched across a run in the fifth inning, despite not registering a hit in the frame.
- Maday worked around a single in the sixth to send things to the seventh before running into some trouble.
- The Tigers started the inning with a single and a base on balls, but Maday got a ground ball for the first out. Towson chased Maday after a single through the left side of the infield plated a run and brought the go-ahead run to the plate.
- Ashton Melaas entered in relief, promptly recording the final two outs, securing the save by closing out the Tigers.
STATS AND NOTES
- Costello led the Seawolves at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.

- Melaas registered her third save of the season, retiring the only two batters she faced and stranding the two runners she inherited.
- Badger reached safely three times, driving in one run.
- Seven Seawolves registered a hit in the contest. Eight of the Seawolves' nine starters reached base safely in the contest.
