STONY BROOK, N.Y. - In a back-and-forth affair, Stony Brook men's lacrosse lost 13-12 in overtime against Providence. The Friars netted the game-winner with 2:06 remaining in the extra period at LaValle Stadium on Saturday.
Nick Dupuis led the Seawolves with nine points, while he and
Dylan Pallonetti each led the team with four goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was all Providence early, as the Friars jumped out to an early 6-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. Stony Brook swiftly responded with a 6-0 run to start the second, giving the Seawolves their first lead of the day at the 2:41 mark of the period.
The run was fueled by dominant play from Dupuis, who tallied four goals and two assists during the run. The lead was short-lived however, as Providence answered a little over a minute later to send the game into halftime tied at 7-7.
Both teams traded goals early in the third. Christian Lowd and Richie Dechiaro both scored their first goals of the season for Stony Brook, while Providence tallied a last-second score to even things at 9-9 heading into the fourth.
Three straight goals from Pallonetti, Garrett Gibbons and Noah Armitage to open the fourth gave the Seawolves a 12-9 lead at the 10:16 mark. Providence answered back with its own 3-0 run to send the game into overtime, bookmarked by a goal with nine seconds left in the fourth. Pallonetti's last second shot after Chris Esposito's face-off win in the final moments was saved.
Stony Brook won the opening faceoff, but the Seawolves' lone shot attempt of the period by Pallonetti was blocked. A save from Tommy Wilk kept the Seawolves in it, but the ensuing ground ball was picked up by the Friars, leading to Chris Cusolito's game-winning goal.
