Ackerman Drives in Five, Badger's Walk-Off Powers Seawolves to Eighth Straight Win

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Mia Haynes and Ashton Melaas combined to throw a shutout on Wednesday as Stony Brook blanked St. John's, 9-0, to win its eighth straight game.

Haynes picked up the win for Stony Brook, going five shutout innings while giving up one hit, walking one, and striking out seven. Melaas was dealing out of the bullpen as well, throwing a shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.

Naiah Ackerman drove in a career-high five runs; Catherine Anne Kupinski and Corinne Badger homered in the victory as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Seawolves took a lead in the first inning, plating a run on a bases-loaded walk by Ackerman.
  • Haynes began the afternoon with three hitless innings before allowing her first hit with two outs in the fourth frame. She worked around a pair of baserunners to keep the Red Storm off the board.
  • Kupinski led off the home half of the third inning with a solo shot to center. Ackerman followed with a round-tripper to left that put the Seawolves ahead 4-0.
  • Julianna Sanzone doubled off the fence in left-center, adding to Stony Brook's lead in the fourth. Ackerman added on two more RBI with a rope to left, pushing the Seawolves' lead to six runs.
  • Haynes retired the side in order in the fifth inning before giving way to Melaas out of the pen for the sixth inning. Melaas punched out the first batter she faced en route to a 1-2-3 inning, setting up the Seawolves for the walk-off win.
  • Kupinski drew a leadoff walk and Badger followed with a no-doubt homer to left-center that enacted the run rule in the sixth inning.
