Seawolves Rally for Second Straight Day at Hofstra, Earn Series Win and 10th Consecutive Victory

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Stony Brook softball team put together a seventh-inning rally to win in thrilling fashion for the second straight day, defeating Hofstra 4-3. The Seawolves scored two runs in the seventh to earn the come-from-behind victory over Hofstra.

Ashton Melaas earned the victory out of the bullpen for the second straight day, tossing 4.2 shutout innings while scattering four hits. She relieved Gabrielle Maday, who allowed three runs, two earned, over two-plus innings of work on Saturday.

Offensively, the Seawolves were led by Corinne Badger, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Alyssa Costello put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double. Catherine Anne Kupinski provided the game-winning hit in the seventh, plating two runs to complete the comeback for the Seawolves against their Long Island rivals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Badger opened the scoring in the top of the first, sending an offering over the wall in left, scoring Kyra McFarland with the game's first two runs.
  • Hofstra responded in the home half with a lead-off homer, but Stony Brook maintained the one-run lead.
  • A pair of Hofstra doubles in the second inning pulled the Pride back even with the Seawolves.
  • Hofstra added a run in the third on a bases-loaded walk after the inning was extended by an error, taking a 3-2 lead.
  • Stony Brook left runners on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before capitalizing in the seventh.
  • Brooke Dye started things in the seventh, beating out an infield single with a head-first slide into first base. A Costello single through the right side of the infield put two runners on with nobody out.
  • After a strikeout, McFarland reached safely on a bunt, loading the bases with one away. Kupinski singled into right, plating Madelyn Stepski and Costello with the go-ahead run. The Seawolves may have added more runs if not for a fine defensive play at third that ended the inning.
  • Despite a two-out error on a pop-up aided by swirling winds in Hempstead, Melaas closed the door and completed Stony Brook's second come-from-behind victory in as many days.
STATS AND NOTES
  • The victory was Stony Brook's 10th straight and the eighth consecutive against a conference foe.
  • Stony Brook's 10-game winning streak is the seventh longest active streak in all of Division I. The Seawolves have won five straight road games, tied for the 10th-longest active road winning streak in the nation.
  • The Seawolves' 10-game win streak matches its best stretch since the 2019 season.
  • Melaas earned a win for the second straight day out of the pen, her sixth of the season. She has now put together four consecutive appearances without allowing a run, holding the opposition scoreless over her last 7.2 innings pitched.
  • Maday and Melaas combined to limit Hofstra to a 1-for-10 (.100) mark with runners in scoring position. Hofstra totaled nine hits and two walks, but managed just three runs.
  • Badger went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in the win. Kupinski plated Stony Brook's other two runs with a clutch single in the seventh inning.
  • McFarland extended her hit streak to 12 straight games with a first-inning single. She also registered her team-leading 16th multi-hit effort of the year.
  • Costello was the only other Seawolf to tally multiple hits in the ballgame.
