Softball Extends Win Streak to 13 in Sweep of FDU, Bryant Earns 1,000th Victory of Head Coaching Career

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook University softball team swept a doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday, extending its win streak to 13 games. Megan T. Bryant notched the 1,000th win of her head coaching career in the game two victory over the Knights.

GAME ONE: STONY BROOK 9, FDU 1 (6 INN.)
  • Mia Haynes got the win for Stony Brook. The right-hander went all six innings, giving up one run on three hits, while allowing two walks and striking out four.
  • Alicia Orosco collected four hits in four trips to the plate, doubling twice and scoring three runs in the game one victory.
  • Naiah Ackerman homered and drew a walk.
  • Corinne Badger and Julianna Sanzone drove in two runs apiece. Catherine Anne Kupinski and Kyra McFarland plated one run each.
  • As a team, Stony Brook scored in five of the six innings in the first game. The Seawolves scored three times in the sixth to walk it off.
GAME TWO: STONY BROOK 11, FDU 3 (5 INN.)
  • Gabrielle Maday earned the victory in game two, throwing five innings, giving up three runs on four hits. She did not allow a walk and did not record a strikeout.
  • McFarland collected three hits, including a walk-off two-run homer. She added a double and three runs scored.
  • Kupinski and Orosco also notched three hits apiece. Kupinski drove in a game-high three runners, homering in the win.
  • Seven Seawolves drove in at least one run. Sanzone homered and Chloe Montalvo added an extra-base hit as well.
  • Four Seawolves registered multiple hits, including Montalvo.
  • Eight of Stony Brook's nine starters had a hit in the win.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Bryant earned the 1,000th win of her head coaching career. She collected win No. 656 at Stony Brook in her 24th season at the helm of the program. Prior to Stony Brook, Bryant won 281 games at Drake and 63 at Stetson.
  • The victory was Stony Brook's 13th consecutive, the program's longest winning streak since winning 15 straight during the 2014 season.
  • Stony Brook's 13-game win streak is tied for the fourth longest active streak in all of Division I.
  • During its win streak, Stony Brook has outscored the opposition 79-18.
  • McFarland extended her hit streak to 15 straight games with hits in both contests. The home run was the second of her collegiate career. Her first was an inside-the-parker at Hofstra on Sunday, April 14.
  • Orosco hit safely in seven of her eight at-bats between the two games. She doubled twice, scored five runs and plated one.
  • Kupinski finished a combined 6-for-7 at the plate, driving in four runs and scoring four times.
  • Ackerman, Kupinski, McFarland and Sanzone all homered on Wednesday. The Seawolves' 25 homers this season are second-most in the CAA, trailing only Delaware (27).
  • Offensively, the Seawolves collected 28 hits in the two contests. Stony Brook picked up double-digit hits in each game, the 10th time this season the team has notched 10 or more hits in a game.
  • Stony Brook's 11 runs in game two matched a season high. The Seawolves have scored double-digit runs three times this season.
  • Haynes earned her team-leading 11th win of the season. She has now won seven of her last eight starts. Haynes has lowered her season ERA to 2.88 during that span, allowing eight earned runs over her last 49.2 innings pitched.
  • Maday improved to 9-4 on the season and has earned the win in four of her last five starts.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We played two great games today. I liked where we were in all three parts of our game," Bryant noted postgame. "Gabby finished stronger than she started in the second game, which was nice to see. I thought our offense and defense were outstanding all day."

"It's a big credit to all the players, assistant coaches, the support staff, the admins… everybody that's involved in it," Bryant commented when asked about reaching the 1,000-win milestone. "It's been a special journey."

NEXT UP
Stony Brook hosts Drexel for a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 19. The Seawolves and Dragons for a 3 p.m. first pitch on Friday, while Saturday and Sunday are slated to begin at 1 p.m. at University Field. All three games of the series will stream live on FloSoftball.
