NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Stony Brook University softball team erased a five-run deficit to beat Iona, 8-6, on Tuesday afternoon at Donald E. Walsh Field. The Seawolves extended their winning streak to 17 straight games with a come-from-behind victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Iona opened the scoring with a three-spot in the third inning. Hailey Guerrero hit a two-run shot and Jamie Sheeran followed with a homer of her own to put the Seawolves in a three-run hole. Gabrielle Maday relieved Ashton Melaas, securing the final out of the third inning.
- The Gaels added on in the fourth against Maday with two more runs after their third round-tripper of the ballgame.
- Facing a five-run deficit, Stony Brook scratched across two runs in the fifth on a pair of bases-loaded hit-by-pitches. The Seawolves added two more on a Chloe Montalvo single through the middle, chasing Iona's starter from the game.
- Alyssa Costello tied the contest in the fifth with a two-out, two-strike single into the opposite field. Alicia Orosco gave the Seawolves' their first lead of the game with a two-run triple, her first of the season, to cap off a seven-run inning.
- Iona responded with a run in the home half of the fifth off Mia Haynes, who entered in relief of Maday.
- Julianna Sanzone restored Stony Brook's two-run lead with a solo shot to left with two outs in the sixth inning.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"It was good to see us turn this game around and do what we needed to do to win the ballgame," head coach
Megan T. Bryant said. "We were a little flat coming out and Iona has some hitters who like to swing it. We got back to playing with intent and being productive offensively. Our defense was excellent and we maintained our poise."
