Volleyball Victorious in Home Opener Against Hofstra

 STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook volleyball team secured a three-set sweep over CAA foe and Long Island rival, Hofstra, on Friday evening in their home opener at Pritchard Gymnasium. The victory boosted the Seawolves' record to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in CAA play.
 


 
The Stony Brook attack was paced by Kali Moore, who finished with 17 kills on the night while accumulating a hitting percentage of .267, and by Quinn Anderson, who added 10 kills, hitting a team-high .381. Defensively, three players recorded double figures in digs, including 14 from Torri Henry, 13 from Julia Patsos, and 10 from Leoni Kunz. From the front row, Mercedes Motton contributed a team-high six blocks.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
SET 1 | The Seawolves came out on top of a tight first set, winning 26-24 in a stanza that showcased six ties and three lead changes. Moore led the team with six kills through the opening frame as Stony Brook had a solid defensive performance that blocked four Hofstra attacks.
 
SET 2 | Stony Brook took the second set 25-23 to quickly grab a 2-0 lead. The Seawolves took the lead for good late with a pair of kills from Moore and Anderson. Four aces would contribute to the set victory from Madison Cigna, Patsos and Kunz.
 
SET 3 | Stony Brook then finished off the match with a dominant 25-18 victory to sweep the Pride. The Seawolves took control early and never trailed, ending on a strong note with their biggest lead, totaling 15 kills along the way.

  • Stony Brook is 4-12 all-time against Hofstra, most recently
  • The Seawolves had three players with double figure digs (Henry, Patsos, Kunz).
  • Junior outside hitter Kali Moore had a match-high 17 kills for Stony Brook. It was her eighth match of the season that she recorded 12 or more kills.
  • Graduate student setter Torri Henry had a match-high 33 assists and a team-high 14 digs. It was her ninth match of the season with over 30 assists in nine matches.
  • Sophomore defensive specialist Madison Cigna had a match-high two aces in the win.
  • Redshirt freshman middle blocker Mercedes Motton had a match-high six blocks.

"What an awesome environment in Pritchard tonight! Thank you to everybody who came and got loud. It made a difference. I thought our group worked hard both physically and mentally tonight. We know CAA play is going to be tight sets, and I thought we managed the emotions of the match well. We need the support again tomorrow for a rematch in Pritchard," stated head coach Kristin Belzung postgame.

The Seawolves return to Pritchard Gymnasium tomorrow at 6:31 p.m. for the second of two matches against Hofstra for the Battle of Long Island. The match is set to broadcast on FloVolleyball.
