Men's Soccer Captures First Win in Shutout Over George Washington

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook University men's soccer team cruised to a 3-0 shutout victory over George Washington to secure their first win of the season on Tuesday evening at LaValle Stadium. Rushon Sandy earned his first clean sheet of the season, and Trevor Harrison, Jonas Bickus, and Finlay Oliver all supplied goals in the win.

Harrison opened scoring in the 34th minute with his first goal of the season. As the Revolutionaries' keeper, Tom Macauley came out of goal to corral the ball, Harrison was able to retrieve it and find him way around Macauley and another defender to fire shot to the back of the net.

Early in the second half, Bickus was able to pad the Seawolves' lead, blasting a penalty kick goal past Macauley. 54 seconds later, a brilliant play mapped itself out for Stony Brook from Lorenzo Selini to Bickus and then Oliver who would net another goal for the 3-0 lead and ultimately, secure the Seawolves their first victory of the season.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Sandy collected six saves for the Seawolves. The rookie keeper is up to 18 saves in four contests this season.
  • Bickus totaled three points on one goal and one assist, leading the team with six shots.
  • Oliver's goal was his second of the season, as Harrison scored his first.
  • The Seawolves recorded 19 shots in total, 10 of which were credited on goal.
  • Stony Brook's three goals are the most in a single game since totaling three in a draw against Le Moyne last season on October 11, 2023.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"I'm very happy to get the win. I thought we've been playing well, and we've probably deserved better results, but we haven't gotten some the past couple of games, noted head coach Ryan Anatol postgame. "The challenge today was to come out and continue to work hard and do what we've been doing well through a full 90 minutes. I thought we started the game off very well, and we went ahead and later defended well in the second half and we knew they'd have to chase the game and push forward. That would give us some space behind, and we'd be able to take advantage, so happy to get the result and score three goals and also to get a clean sheet overall."
