STONY BROOK, N.Y. The Stony Brook football team will open the doors at LaValle Stadium this weekend as the Seawolves host the Stonehill Skyhawks on Saturday, Sept. 7 for a 3:30 p.m. kick.

OPENING KICK
  • Stony Brook will look to bounce back from a season-opening defeat, welcoming Stonehill on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 3:30 p.m. at LaValle Stadium for the 2024 home opener.
  • Stony Brook fell to FBS foe Marshall, 45-3, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia in Week 1.
  • Saturday marks the third matchup between these two programs and it is the first meeting between the two programs since 1990.
  • Stony Brook owns a 5-5 record in their last 10 home openers, dating back to 2014. The Seawolves are looking to snap a four-game losing streak in home openers on Saturday against Stonehill.
  • Saturday is the first of six home games for the Seawolves during the 2024 season. After today, Stony Brook is set to host Morgan State, Villanova, William & Mary, UAlbany and Monmouth.
NEW OFFENSE IN ACTION
  • The quarterback duo of graduate Tyler Knoop and freshman Malachi Marshall made their debut for Stony Brook against Marshall in week 1.
  • Knoop got the start for Stony Brook under center, completing 8-of-13 passes for 62 yards, including a 32-yard pass to Jayce Freeman. Knoop also rushed for nine yards on three carries.
  • Marshall entered the game in place of Knoop in the second quarter. The rookie went 10-of-20 for 96 yards through the air with an interception, rushing the ball 11 times.
  • In the CAA Weekly Media Call on Sept. 2, head coach Billy Cosh named Malachi Marshall the starter for week two against Stonehill.
  • Chance Knox and Jasiah Williams also made their debuts for Stony Brook at wide receiver. Knox led the team with five catches for 12 yards, while Williams caught his only target.
FERRELI, CHALMERS, LEGAGNEUR AND SILVERA LEAD THE DEFENSE
  • Redshirt sophomore Anthony Ferrelli, graduate student Chayce Chalmers and redshirt senior Clarens Legagneur all tallied career-bests in tackles for Stony Brook against Marshall, while redshirt senior Rudy Silvera led the team in solo tackles.
  • Ferrelli finished with a career-high 14 tackles against the Herd, shattering his previous career high of eight.
  • Chalmers surpassed his previous career-high of eight tackles after tallying 10 against Marshall.
  • Legagneur eclipsed his career-high with six tackles versus the Herd in Week 1.
  • In his first game with Stony Brook following his transfer from LIU, Silvera led the team with six solo tackles, his most since he had eight against St. Francis during his time at LIU.
STRONG ARE THE SPECIALISTS
  • Preseason FCS Punter of the Year Clayton Taylor hit nine punts for 392 yards, averaging 43.6 yards per kick and putting two punts inside the 20, matching a career-high in punt attempts (9 at Richmond on Sept. 24, 2022 and 9 at William & Mary on Oct. 1, 2022).
  • Taylor is now tied for second in the CAA with nine punts and 392 total yards in the air. He is also tied for second in the conference with two punts inside the 20.
  • Redshirt junior Enda Kirby gave the Seawolves three points with a 39-yard field goal in the third quarter against Marshall.
  • The 39-yard kick was a new career high for Kirby. It also was the tied for the fourth-longest made field goal in the CAA during week one.
  • Kirby improved to a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals during his Stony Brook career. 
 ABOUT THE SKYHAWKS
  • Stonehill head coach Eli Gardner enters his ninth ninth year at the helm of the Skyhawks football program and his 16th year at the collegiate level.
  • Stonehill was picked to finish fifth in the Northeast Conference Preseason Poll by the league's seven head coaches. Junior defensive back Jordan Irvine was selected to the Preseason All-NEC team.
  • The Skyhawks are coming off a 5-5 (4-3 NEC) season last year. After losing four of their first six games to begin the season, Stonehill won three of their last four contests against Sacred Heart, Duquesne and LIU.
  • Ashur Carraha returns to Stonehill as the leading passer after finishing with 12 touchdowns, 8 interceptions and 1,573 yards (141-for-295) last season. The Skyhawks also return Zavion Woodard in the backfield, who finished with 203 yards for four touchdowns in 2023.
  • On the defensive side, Irvine returns as a standout after he completed his 2023 campaign with 30 tackles and an interception. Zach Athy also returns to Stonehill for the 2024 season following a season where he posted 2.0 sacks and 18 tackles.
