ALBANY, N.Y. — Stony Brook student-athletes Cal Redman (football) and Linn Beck (women's soccer) were named SUNY Scholar-Athletes of the Year for combining academic achievement with success in the arena of athletic competition.

The SUNY Scholar-Athlete Awards recognize student-athletes from SUNY colleges and universities sponsoring intercollegiate athletics at the four- and two-year levels who were nominated and voted upon by representatives of their respective institutions. Students are nominated by their institutions based on their cumulative grade point average, current and career statistics, and athletic and academic honors.

The SUNY Scholar Athlete Awards recognize outstanding academic and athletic success in 29 different sports and are presented three times a year to coincide with the specific sports contested in the fall, winter and spring seasons. The Scholar Athletes of the Year in each sport will then be nominated for an overall Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's sports and women's sports in each category that will be announced in mid-July.

Beck was an integral part of Stony Brook's first-ever CAA Championship, finishing the season with 10 goals, six assists and 26 points. She earned a multitude of postseason honors, including United Soccer Coaches All-America, United Soccer Coaches All-East Region, CSC Academic All-District and CAA Midfielder of the Year. Beck scored the game-winning goal in the Seawolves' win over Monmouth in the CAA Championship, earning Most Outstanding Performer honors. Inside the classroom, Beck posted a 3.92 grade point average, majoring in psychology.

In his final season, Redman set career highs in receptions (32), receiving yards (393) and touchdowns (4). He ranked second in the CAA for touchdowns by a tight end and was instrumental in key victories, scoring in back-to-back wins over Towson and William & Mary. He recorded at least one reception in 10 of 12 games this season and tallied 30 or more receiving yards in half of the Seawolves games in 2024. Inside the classroom, Redman posted a 3.65 grade point average while working towards his Masters in social work.

More than 14,000 student-athletes compete at SUNY institutions representing 53 different colleges and universities at the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division III/USCAA and NJCAA levels and are eligible for the awards.
