Freeman Shines in Football’s Road Loss to No. 10/11 Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- Stony Brook wide receiver Jayce Freeman led the way for the Seawolves with 220 total yards, including a 95-yard kick return touchdown, but the No. 10/11 Monmouth Hawks scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to take a 49-21 win in New Jersey.

Freeman was a bright spot for the Seawolves all afternoon. The wide receiver set a new career-high with 220 total yards. He led the team with 63 yards on five catches and added a career-best 157 return yards on four attempts, highlighted by his electric 95-yard touchdown.

For the first time this season, all three Stony Brook quarterbacks saw action. Chris Zellous got the start and went 13-for-22 for 103 yards and two interceptions. He also led the ground game with 107 rushing yards on 17 carries. Casey Case entered in the fourth quarter and finished 7-for-12 with 76 passing yards and three on the ground. Quinn Boyd made his collegiate debut, completing 4-of-7 passes for 26 yards.

The Seawolves spread the ball around in the passing game, as 10 different players recorded receptions. Behind Freeman's team-best 63 yards was Marqeese Dietz, who tied for the team lead with five catches, totaling 41 yards. Ikaika Ragsdale also caught five passes for 18 yards, while Dez Williams and RJ Lamarre combined for five catches and 50 yards.

Roland Dempster continued his consistent production with his sixth straight game of 90+ rushing yards, finishing with 92 on 19 carries and scoring his team-leading seventh touchdown of the season. He also added 10 receiving yards on two catches. Ragsdale ran for 11 yards, and Dylan Harris chipped in three more off the bench.

Defensively, Anthony Ferrelli led the team with 13 tackles, including 0.5 tackles for loss. Sebastian Regis and AJ Roberts each recorded a sack, while Dyshier Clary and Chayce Chalmers added 1.5 tackles for loss apiece. In total, 18 Seawolves registered a tackle.

Clayton Taylor punted twice, totaling 72 yards, including a kick that pinned Monmouth at their 10-yard line.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Monmouth elected to receive the opening kickoff and marched down the field in eight plays, covering 75 yards and finishing with a 28-yard touchdown pass to take an early 7-0 lead.
  • After the Seawolves were stopped on fourth down at their own 41-yard line with 10:41 left in the first, Monmouth struck again with another passing touchdown to go up 14-0.
  • Stony Brook answered right away. Freeman returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to the house, cutting the deficit to 14-7.
  • AJ Roberts came up with a sack on third and 15 at the MON 20-yard line to force a punt.
  • Stony Brook then drove 54 yards in seven plays but fumbled at the MON 1-yard line, with the ball rolling into the end zone and giving Monmouth possession with 2:44 left in the first quarter.
  • The Hawks capitalized on the turnover, scoring on a 15-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-7.
  • Stony Brook responded with an 11-play, 42-yard drive but came up short on fourth down at the MON 35-yard line with 8:34 left in the half.
  • The defense held firm. After a 17-play Monmouth drive reached the SBU 5-yard line, DaMario Crawford broke up a pass in the end zone on fourth down to force a turnover on downs.
  • Using the momentum, Stony Brook went 95 yards in 11 plays, capped by a one-yard rushing touchdown from Dempster to make it 21-14. Freeman and Zellous connected throughout the drive, including a 33-yard sideline grab by Freeman.
  • Coming out of halftime, the Seawolves received the kickoff and started strong with a 15-yard run by Zellous. However, Monmouth came up with a strip-sack, recovering the ball at the SBU 26-yard line.
  • Once again, the defense stood tall, forcing a quick three-and-out capped by a sack from Sebastian Regis.
  • Monmouth then extended its lead to 28-14 with a 50-yard pick-six at the 6:16 mark in the third quarter.
  • Stony Brook's next possession ended in a three-and-out, but the defense responded with one of their own, getting the ball back with under four minutes left in the third.
  • Zellous opened the next drive with a 22-yard connection to Dietz, followed by a 19-yard run to the MON 38. The drive ended in a creative trick play — a touchdown pass from Dietz to Zellous in the corner of the end zone — cutting the gap to 28-21.
  • Monmouth answered quickly with a touchdown pass to push the lead to 35-21.
  • The Seawolves defense forced two more three-and-outs in the fourth quarter, but Monmouth added two late touchdowns to secure the 49-21 win.
