STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's basketball team scored 32 points off of 28 forced turnovers on the way to a 91-59 victory against Molloy at Stony Brook Arena on Friday evening. Diaka Berete poured in 24 points to pace the offense in a strong showing in the Seawolves' home opener.
The Seawolves had two players score in double figures, led by Berete, who had 24 points. Chloe Oliver tacked on 10 points and Delaney Cooper added six points and six steals defensively.
The Stony Brook offense was very productive from beyond the arc, knocking down eight threes on 19 attempts. Berete was the most prolific shooter for the Seawolves, draining four treys in the contest.
The Stony Brook defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Friday's game, forcing 28 Molloy turnovers and turning those takeaways turned into 32 points on the other end of the floor. Cooper's six steals led the way individually for the Seawolves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 10-8, Stony Brook went on a 6-0 run with 3:23 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Sandra Frau-Garcia, to take a 14-10 lead. The Seawolves then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 19-12 advantage. Stony Brook did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 19 points close to the basket.
Stony Brook kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 9:46 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 27-12. The Seawolves proceeded to tack on 11 points to that lead and enjoyed a 53-27 advantage heading into halftime. Stony Brook forced six Molloy turnovers in the period and turned them into 14 points.
Stony Brook continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Oliver, to expand its lead further to 60-29 with 6:51 to go in the third. The Seawolves held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 72-41 edge. Stony Brook knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 19 total points.
Stony Brook kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Cooper's layup, to grow the lead to 87-55 with 1:06 to go in the contest. The Seawolves held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 91-59 win. Stony Brook took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 19 points in the paint.
