Seawolves Fall in Doubleheader Against FIU, Indiana

MIAMI, Fla. – The Stony Brook softball team suffered two losses on Saturday, falling 2-0 to FIU in the first game and 10-1 to Indiana in the second.

With the defeats, the Seawolves dropped to 1-3 on the season and for the weekend.

GAME 1: FIU 2, STONY BROOK 0
  • Naiah Ackerman drew a walk in the first inning but was left stranded as FIU ended the frame with a strikeout and a groundout.
  • A double to right field put the Panthers ahead 1-0 after the first inning. Maddie Male stranded a runner in scoring position to escape further damage.
  • Male retired six consecutive batters through the first three innings before leaving another runner on second to end the third.
  • The Seawolves threatened in the fourth with back-to-back hits from Mia Vannelli and Alyssa Costello, putting runners on second and third with no outs. However, FIU retired the next three batters to maintain its lead.
  • After Stony Brook left a runner on base in the fifth, Male escaped a jam in the bottom half, stranding runners on the corners with a popout and groundout.
  • FIU added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single, extending its lead to 2-0.
  • In the seventh, Kaiya Simpkins notched her first career hit with a pinch-hit single. Kyra McFarland reached second on an error, advancing Simpkins to third, but FIU sealed the win with a popout to end the game.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Male made her first start of the season, tossing six innings while allowing two runs (one earned), one walk, and striking out three. She tied her career-best mark of six innings, previously set against Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 11, 2023.
  • Vannelli led the offense with two hits, marking her second multi-hit game of the weekend.
  • Costello and Vannelli each recorded a double.
  • Simpkins tallied her first collegiate hit in her debut at-bat.
  • Stony Brook falls to 3-5 all-time against FIU.
GAME 2: INDIANA 10, STONY BROOK 1 (6 INNINGS)
  • The Seawolves struck first as McFarland reached on a pitcher's error and used her speed to advance to third. Ackerman followed with an RBI groundout to give Stony Brook a 1-0 lead.
  • Indiana quickly responded with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Hoosiers opened the second with a single, but Emily Reinstein threw out her first runner of the season to end the threat.
  • Both teams remained scoreless until Indiana broke through with a six-run fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead.
  • Making her first career start, Simpkins led off the fifth with a single, but Stony Brook was unable to capitalize.
  • Indiana tacked on a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to secure the 10-1 win.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We did some good things today that we can build on and it was great to see the contribution of players who were given opportunities and made the most of those opportunities. Maddie Male pitched a great game against FIU and gave us a chance to win. If we are more productive offensively, that's a game we win," head coach Megan T. Bryant said. "We hung tough with Indiana for three innings but let the game get away from us in the fourth. It's the second day of the season against very good competition. We will take the experience and use it to get better."
