BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Stony Brook softball split a pair of games on day two of the Spring in the Springs tournament, falling to Chattanooga and topping IU Indy on Saturday.
GAME ONE: CHATTANOOGA 7, STONY BROOK 5
- Stony Brook started the scoring on Saturday, pushing three runs across in the opening inning. Kyra McFarland tripled and came around to score after three straight free passes. Madelyn Stepski singled home another run and the third came across on an Emily Reinstein walk. Two straight strikeouts ended the inning and left the bases juiced.
- Chattanooga responded with a run in the first on a two-out triple, but Stony Brook got the run right back after earning its third bases-loaded walk of the contest.
- Staked to another three-run lead, Crimson Rice strung together three straight scoreless innings before running into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. The Mocs chased Rice after three of the first four hitters reached safely to start the fifth.
- Still leading by a run, Madelaine Male entered in relief of Rice, but two more hits and an error behind Male allowed Chattanooga to grab a 6-4 lead.
- McFarland scored her second run of the afternoon on an Alyssa Costello double to make it a one-run game again in the sixth.
- The Mocs earned an insurance run in the home half of the sixth.
- Stony Brook loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Chattanooga slammed the door shut on the Seawolves' comeback attempt with a pair of punchouts.
GAME TWO: STONY BROOK 6, IU INDY 1
- After a scoreless first frame, Costello blasted her second homer of the spring to give Stony Brook a 1-0 advantage in the second.
- Gabrielle Maday worked around trouble in the second, stranding a pair of runners, allowing her offense to pad the lead in the third.
- A double steal by McFarland and Malorie Hill made it 2-0 in favor of the Seawolves and Stony Brook added another run on a Mia Vannelli base hit that scored McFarland.
- Maday settled in further, retiring the side in order to end the third.
- Stony Brook added two more runs courtesy of hits by Reinstein and Naiah Ackerman, taking a 5-0 lead in the fourth.
- IU Indy spoiled the shutout with a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the fifth.
- Costello's second RBI of the contest made it 6-1 in the seventh. Maday finished out the game, going the distance to help Stony Brook regroup and record a victory.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We came out in game one with better approaches at the plate and sharper defense. Crimson gave us a chance to win it but we let that one get away," head coach Megan T. Bryant said. "It was great to see us regroup and come back to win against IU Indy with a solid effort in all three parts of our game."
