Stony Brook Drops Home Opener to Seton Hall

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook softball fell in its home opener, 12-3, to Seton Hall on Tuesday afternoon at University Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Stony Brook starter Gabrielle Maday surrendered a lead-off homer, walk and another homer to begin the afternoon. Stony Brook made a quick change in the circle, turning to Jordyn Fray, who allowed a pair of baserunners before escaping the first inning.
  • The Seawolves responded promptly, scoring three times in the home half of the first frame. Kyra McFarland started things with a single, coming around to score the game's first run on Madelyn Stepski's two-bagger. Emma Scheitinger delivered the game-tying hit, driving home a pair with an opposite-field double.
  • Seton Hall did damage with two away in the second, adding three more runs to go ahead 6-3.
  • Maddie Male started the third inning for Stony Brook, keeping the Seawolves' deficit at three runs.
  • Offensively, the Seawolves struggled to get much going beyond the first inning.
  • The Pirates added insurance runs against Male in the fourth inning, scoring four times, including a three-run homer.
  • Stony Brook went down in order in the fourth, then fell behind further in the fifth. Seton Hall added two more runs in the fifth to push the lead to nine runs.
  • The Seawolves loaded the bases in the fifth, but could not push the necessary runs across to keep the game going.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Alyssa Costello and McFarland tallied a pair of hits apiece. They accounted for four of Stony Brook's six hits in the contest.
  • Scheitinger plated a pair of runs. Stepski added an RBI as well.
  • The five combined pitchers between the two teams totaled just four strikeouts.
  • Seton Hall hit three homers in the contest.
  • Stony Brook moves to 10-12 all-time against Seton Hall. The Pirates have won two straight meetings, though the Seawolves have won seven of the previous 10.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Really disappointing ballgame today, not in terms of the final score, which certainly wasn't in our favor, but disappointed with our effort and our competitiveness today," head coach Megan T. Bryant said.
