HAMPTON, Va. — Stony Brook softball took down Hampton 9-1 on Friday afternoon to open a three-game series with the Pirates.
Alyssa Costello drove in three runs and
Crimson Rice earned her first CAA win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stony Brook started fast offensively courtesy of a double by Kyra McFarland leading off the game. After a passed ball and a walk drawn by Costello, a double steal allowed McFarland to score the first run of the game.
- Rice worked around baserunners in the second and third innings, completing three no-hit frames to maintain the Seawolves' one-run advantage.
- The Seawolves added a pair of runs in the fourth after a mishap defensively by Hampton and a Costello double to the opposite field.
- Stony Brook tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Emily Reinstein and a Nicole Allen double.
- Rice conceded her first hit of the afternoon with one out in the fifth inning. Hampton strung together three straight hits to push a run across and ultimately force Rice out of the game.
- Gabrielle Maday entered out of the bullpen and retired the next two batters to strand a couple inherited runners.
- Stony Brook padded its lead in the sixth, pushing two more runs across. Both runs were again unearned after errors defensively by the Pirates. Mia Vannelli's RBI single made it 7-1.
- Maday set down the side in order in the sixth, allowing Stony Brook's offense another chance to add insurance runs.
- Costello plated two more runs with a two-out double, scoring Kaiya Simpkins and Daniella Sofia.
- With an eight-run cushion, Maday retired the side in order in the seventh with some help from her defense. After a one-out single, the Seawolves turned a double play on a pop fly in the infield to end the game and secure a victory in game one of the series.
