Stony Brook Scores Season-High 15 Runs in Second Game, Splits Doubleheader at FDU

TEANECK, N.J. — Stony Brook softball split a doubleheader at FDU on Tuesday afternoon in New Jersey. The Seawolves scored a season-high 15 runs in a shutout victory over the Knights in the second game to earn the mid-week split.

GAME ONE: FDU 6, STONY BROOK 2
  • The Seawolves enjoyed continued first-inning success on Tuesday, scoring twice to begin the contest. Stony Brook loaded the bases with no outs, cashing in on a bases-loaded walk and an error in the circle, but missed an opportunity to expand the lead.
  • FDU answered in the home half, taking advantage of a defensive miscue in the outfield on a single that scored a run. Rice induced a grounder to escape the inning, though the Knights cut their deficit in half.
  • Stony Brook put runners on in the second and third innings, but could not add to the lead.
  • Rice worked around a pair of base runners in the third to maintain Stony Brook's lead.
  • The Seawolves turned to Gabrielle Maday in the fifth inning in a one-run game after Rice allowed back-to-back singles to start the frame. Rice's two inherited runners scored on a hit through the middle, giving FDU a 3-2 lead late. Maday finished the inning with a strikeout to escape without further damage.
  • FDU added to its lead in the sixth with a two-run double and a sacrifice fly.
  • Alyssa Costello led off the seventh with a hit, but the Seawolves could not string together anything additional, falling to the Knights in game one.
GAME TWO: STONY BROOK 15, FDU 0 (5 INNINGS)
  • Once again, the Seawolves started hot. Stony Brook scored four times in the opening frame of the second game, courtesy of Nicole Allen, Madelyn Stepski and Mia Vannelli.
  • Maddie Male started game two for the Seawolves, working around a leadoff double to toss a scoreless first inning.
  • Costello doubled home a pair and later scored on a ground out to put Stony Brook ahead by seven runs through one-and-a-half innings.
  • The Seawolves added on in the third frame on a successful double steal and a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
  • Granted a comfortable nine-run lead, Male registered her first 1-2-3 inning in the third frame.
  • Stony Brook did not score in the fourth, but pushed across six in the fifth to put things further out of reach for FDU. Emily Reinstein and Malorie Hill produced back-to-back run-scoring doubles to make it 15-0.
  • Male allowed a walk and a single, but stranded both runners to end the game and finish off the complete-game shutout.
