STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook softball defeated Wagner in a mid-week contest, 5-1, on Wednesday afternoon. The Seawolves tallied 10 hits, with
Alyssa Costello and
Emma Scheitinger putting together multiple-hit performances.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Crimson Rice started things in the circle for Stony Brook, stranding a pair of runners to throw a scoreless first inning.
- Stony Brook's offense started fast with Kyra McFarland and Costello extended their hitting streaks with a single and a double, respectively. Nicole Allen plated the game's first run with a ground out to the right side.
- Rice worked around a lead-off base runner to complete a second scoreless inning, giving way to Maddie Male in the third inning.
- The Seawolves added three runs in the third inning to go ahead 4-0. Costello and Allen led off with back-to-back singles and scored on a Mia Vannelli single and an Emily Reinstein sacrifice fly. Vannelli later scored on a wild pitch to push the Seawolves' advantage to four runs.
- Male faced just six batters in her two innings of work, retiring the side in order in both the third and fourth frames.
- Gabrielle Maday entered in the fifth and set down the Seahawks in order, signifying the 10th straight hitter retired in a row by Stony Brook's pitchers.
- Reinstein and Scheitinger hit back-to-back doubles with one out in the fifth to stretch the lead to five runs.
- Wagner got on the board in the sixth, with help from a defensive miscue in the infield, to trim its deficit to four runs.
- Maday put together a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to secure her fifth save of the season.
STATS AND NOTES
- The trio of Rice, Male and Maday combined to two-hit Wagner, allowing one unearned run in the victory.
- Costello (17), McFarland (9) and Reinstein (9) all hit safely to extend their respective hitting streaks. Reinstein's nine-game hit streak is a season long. Costello (28) and McFarland (18) also expanded on their reached-base streaks, respectively.
- Costello notched her 16th multi-hit game, five shy of McFarland's team-best 21 multi-hit performances this season.
- As a team, Stony Brook tallied double-digit hits for the 11th time this season and for the sixth time in its last nine games.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"It was a solid mid-week win for us. I thought our pitching staff combined to give us a great effort and our defense was pretty good. 10 hits on the day is good, but we could have been more productive offensively," head coach Megan T. Bryant said postgame.
