PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Stony Brook softball's comeback effort fell just short in a 7-6 setback at Drexel on Friday afternoon.
Emma Scheitinger homered for the second straight day and plated four runs in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kyra McFarland and Alyssa Costello singled and Nicole Allen was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs in the first inning. Mia Vannelli and Emily Reinstein hit sacrifice flies to push a pair of runs across to open up Friday afternoon.
- After a lead-off single and an error, Maddie Male secured the second out of the bottom of the first inning. The Dragons produced back-to-back two-out singles to even the contest at 2-2 before Male registered a strikeout to end the frame.
- Madelyn Stepski singled to begin the second but was left in scoring position after a pair of fly outs.
- Drexel continued to do damage against Male, scoring three times in the home half of the second inning. Gabrielle Maday entered to secure the final out of the frame and strand two more runners in scoring position.
- Trailing by three runs, Scheitinger cashed in with a run-scoring single with two outs in the third.
- Drexel's offense continued clicking on all cylinders, registering five straight hits before recording an out in the third to extend its lead to 7-3.
- Maday locked in and retired the next three Dragons to leave the bases loaded, limiting any further damage in the scoring column.
- After both sides went quietly in the fourth, Scheitinger came up clutch again for Stony Brook. She blasted a three-run shot in the fifth, scoring Allen and Vannelli, to make it a one-run game again.
- The Seawolves put the tying run in scoring position in the sixth inning, but could not capitalize.
- Drexel slammed the door on Stony Brook's come-from-behind effort, retiring the side in order in the seventh.
