ELON, N.C. - The Seawolves dropped their first road contest since September 10 on Friday as they fell in the series opener at Elon 3-1 (25-17, 17-25, 25-10, 25-13).
Ella Sanders recorded her seventh double-double of the season tonight with a team-high 14 kills and 13 digs. Zayda Fuertez paced the team in digs with 21 to put her over 500 in her career.
How It Happened
SET 1 | Sanders was locked in early, racking up three kills and an ace in the first half of the set to hand the Seawolves a five-point 11-6 lead. However, the Phoenix answered with multiple extended runs to soon pull ahead 17-13. A block from Sanders and a kill from Taryn Su would briefly cut the lead down to 18-17, but a 7-0 Elon run would end the set.
SET 2 | Lei Lasike and Quinn Anderson each had a pair of kills to go along with another three from Sanders to make it 15-7 Seawolves at the break. Sanders added two more kills out of the timeout, while Ayanna Pierre Louis and Damisi Osibodu both had a block and a kill as Stony Brook flipped the script on the first set and took set two 25-17.
SET 3 | Sanders did not let up in the third, scoring four of the team's first six points in the set on three kills and an ace to secure her double-double. Despite this, though, the Seawolves were unable to slow the Phoenix as they went on another extended run, scoring 15 of the next 16 to take a huge lead and hold it through the end of the set.
SET 4 | Stony Brook remained on the back foot in the fourth, quickly falling behind 3-0 and trailing for the remainder of the set. Sanders would pick up two more kills in the set while Mercedes Motton scored three as the two provided the bulk of the offense in the 25-13 loss.
Notable Stats
- Sanders' double-double brings her to 766 career kills and 594 digs.
