Stony Brook Falls to Big Ten Foe Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Seawolves took their first loss of the season on Friday as they hit the road for a Power 4 matchup with Northwestern, falling 78-65.

How It Happened

  • Three minutes in, the Seawolves found themselves in a 10-point hole as they trailed 12-2 as a Bryan Ndjonga layup accounted for all the offense.
  • With Stony Brook trailing 19-5 with 12 minutes to play, Ethan Simmon came in off the bench notched the team's first triple of the night as he drained one from the left side. He would follow up less than a minute later with another from deep to cut the deficit to 19-11.
  • The Wildcats quickly rebuilt their double-digit advantage, going up 25-12 with seven minutes remaining in the half. It would take until 3:57 after back-to-back layups from Quin Gorman and Jaden Daughtry to bring the lead back into single digits as Stony Brook trailed 33-24.
  • Both teams would trade buckets over the final two minutes, with the Seawolves ending the half down 44-30. Over the final 15 minutes of the half, Stony Brook was outscored by just one at 29-28.
  • Daughtry opened the second half with an and-one just 15 seconds in, before adding another from the line a few seconds later to make it 44-34. A Ndjonga layup made it six Seawolves points in a row to make it an eight-point game 90 seconds into the half.
  • Once again, though, Stony Brook's momentum would not last long as the Wildcats scored eight of the next 12 to go up 52-40 with 15 minutes remaining.
  • The Seawolves continued to hover around a 10-point deficit with Özgür Cengiz knocking down a pair of threes at 10:56 and 7:08, each time bringing it down to a nine-point lead. Stony Brook could not keep the momentum up for long, however, as the Wildcats regained control and carried a 70-58 lead into the final five minutes.
  • Four more points from Ndjonga and another triple from Cengiz would be all Stony Brook would get in down the stretch as the team fell 78-65.

Stats and Notes

  • After opening the night down 15-2 in the first five minutes, Stony Brook proceeded to match Northwestern 63-63 over the final 35 minutes of the game.
  • Ndjonga now has back-to-back double-digit scoring games to begin his Seawolves career after leading the team with 19 today.
  • Likewise, Ugusuk now has two games in double figures to open his Stony Brook tenure with another 12 tonight.
  • Cengiz also has himself a pair of games in double figures to begin his collegiate career after scoring 13.
