Stony Brook Falls in Extra Inning Thriller Against UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --The Stony Brook Seawolves fell 4-3 in an eight-inning matchup to the North Florida Ospreys on Sunday afternoon to conclude their weekend in Florida.

Jayci Finch was a bright spot and tossed for the Seawolves, starting the ballgame and throwing seven innings, giving up three runs, all earned, on six hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.

At the plate, the Seawolves were paced by junior Ella Hayes, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a double and three RBIs. Sophomore Mia Vannelli put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4. Rachael Brown also helped out for Stony Brook, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Seawolves opened the scoring in the top of the first. With two outs, Malorie Hill was hit by a pitch and Brown followed with a single to center to put two on. After Madelyn Stepski was also hit by a pitch, Ella Hayes lined a single up the middle to give Stony Brook an early 1-0 lead.
  • Jayci Finch got the start this afternoon. After allowing two runs in the first, the graduate student bounced back with a scoreless second to swing the momentum back to Stony Brook.
  • In the top of the third, the Seawolves regained the lead with two runs in the frame. Hill sparked it again with a walk, Brown singled once more, and Hayes drove them both in with a double to right-center to put Stony Brook ahead, 3-2.
  • Finch was sharp over the next two innings, retiring the side in order in both the third and fourth.
  • After Stony Brook left a runner on in the top of the fifth, UNF answered in the bottom half with a two-out double up the middle to even the score at 3-3.
  • Mia Vannelli singled in the top of the sixth before UNF ended the threat. Finch kept dealing, tossing another 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half.
  • UNF set the Seawolves down in order in the seventh. Finch returned to the circle and worked around a single and a stolen base, recording a two-out flyout to strand the runner in scoring position and send the game to extras.
  • The Seawolves were held scoreless in the top of the eighth, and UNF walked it off with a single in the bottom half to secure a 4-3 victory over Stony Brook.

  • The Seawolves out-hit the Ospreys at a 10-7 clip.
