STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook men's lacrosse earned its first win of the 2026 campaign, overcoming a halftime deficit to pick up an 8-6 victory over Iona on Wednesday afternoon at LaValle Stadium. Stony Brook's defense shut out the Gaels over the final 32-plus minutes of game action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stony Brook drew first blood when
Justin Bonacci converted on a feed from
Caleb Yeung just over five minutes into the contest. Iona responded to knot the contest at 1-1, but the Seawolves closed the opening quarter with a 2-1 lead on a goal from
Will Birney. The second quarter saw both teams trade goals, with Iona striking first in the period. The Gaels grabbed a 6-4 edge, but the Seawolves turned the momentum late in the half when
Declan Mitchell tallied a goal off of a face-off win to put the Seawolves down a goal.
Stony Brook carried the energy into the second half, with Bonacci's third of the day in the third quarter leveling the score at 6-6. In the fourth quarter, the Seawolves surged ahead for good.
Collin Williamson delivered two late goals, including one man-up strike, pushing Stony Brook ahead by a pair and sealing the squad's first win of the season. Stony Brook's balanced attack featured six different goal scorers. Defensively,
Tommy Wilk registered 12 saves, while the Seawolves' defensive unit allowed just six goals, including none in the second half.
STATS AND NOTES
- Stony Brook did not concede a second-half goal, outscoring Iona 3-0 over the final 30 minutes of play to complete the come-from-behind victory.
- Williamson netted a pair of goals, marking the second-straight multi-goal output for the junior from Branchburg, New Jersey.
- Bonacci led the way offensively with a team-high three points (two goals, one assist). He has registered a goal in all four games this season, extending streak of registering at least one goal to 14 straight contests, dating back to 2025.
- Mitchell won a season-best nine face-offs, finishing 9-12 at X. He also netted his first goal of the season and first since May 4, 2023 against Drexel.
- Stony Brook improved to 2-0 in the series history with Iona.
