ELON, N.C. - No. 4 Stony Brook's run in the CAA tournament came to an end on Friday as the team was eliminated from contention after a 7-3 loss to No. 2 UNCW.
How It Happened
- Defensive miscues helped the Seawolves get on the board first as a dropped third strike allowed Ella Hayes to reach, before a single from Marissa Thalassinos and a muffed catch by the first baseman on a Josie Alfano grounder brought in the first run.
- The Seahawks, though, quickly responded in the bottom of the frame on a two-run home run from the two hitter.
- UNCW tacked on another run in the second to grow its lead to 3-1. However, more defensive woes in the top of the third allowed the Seawolves to tie it back up after Hayes reached on another error and came around to score along with Thalassinos on a two-run single from Mia Vannelli.
- The back-and-forth nature of the game continued in the bottom of the third, as a double and a triple plated two more to give the Seahawks a 5-3 edge. After a scoreless fourth, they would grow their lead to four after loading the bases in the bottom of the sixth and cashing in on two runs.Â
- Unfortunately, the Seawolves did not have another late comeback in them as one more hit from Thalassinos was all they would get in the seventh.
