J. Rizzo Signs Professional Contract with Sussex County Miners

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook baseball alum John Rizzo '26 has signed a professional contract with the Sussex County Miners in the Frontier League, as the organization announced.

Rizzo joins catcher Scott Gell '26 and Micah Worley '26 as Stony Brook players who have signed professional baseball contracts this offseason. Gell was signed by the San Francisco Giants as an undrafted free agent, while Worley was selected in the sixth round by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Rizzo also joins Evan Giordano '23, who appeared in 179 games for the Miners over three seasons from 2023-25.

A 2026 team captain and CSC Academic All-District selection, Rizzo appeared in 18 games, making two starts and tying for second on the team in appearances. He posted a 2-3 record with a team-leading five saves over 42.2 innings, striking out 38 batters with a 5.48 ERA. Rizzo recorded his first save of the season with 1.1 scoreless innings at Charleston on March 13, earned wins against Monmouth on March 22 and UNCW on April 2, and added saves against Towson, New Haven, Monmouth and UMass Lowell.

For his career, Rizzo appeared in 32 games over two seasons and recorded a 7-7 record with five saves. He tossed 107.1 innings, striking out 89 batters while making 14 starts on the mound.
