Stony Brook Erases 18-Point Deficit, Falls 41-34 in Dover

DOVER, Del. - The Stony Brook football team fought back from a 31-13 deficit in the third quarter and tied the game at 34-34 with 11 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter but ultimately fell 41-34 to Delaware State this evening at Alumni Stadium.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Stony Brook received the ball to start the evening. Hester started the night with a 5-yard rush followed by a six-yard rush for the Seawolves' first down of the game. After a short pass by Boyd, the Seawolves were forced to punt with 12:52 left in the first.
  • The Stony Brook defense went to work on their first possession of the evening by forcing a three-and-out to allow Stony Brook to get the football back at the opposing 46-yard line following punt return by CJ Hester.
  • On their next possession, the Seawolves took an early 6-0 lead after Boyd and Linkins connected on a 36-yard pass.
  • Delaware State responded to take a 7-6 lead following a 76-yard pass on the third play of their drive.
  • After the Seawolves were stopped at the 25-yard line on fourth down following a 43-yard reception from James Dely, Delaware State knocked in a 41-yard field goal as time expired in the first quarter.
  • The Seawolves punted the ball to the opposing 41-yard line before the Hornets extended their lead to 17-6 with 13:21 left in the second quarter after a 59-yard touchdown rush.
  • The SBU defense held strong after a pick by the road team advanced the ball to their 33-yard line, forcing a three-and-out that led to a touchback for the Seawolves with 11:28 remaining in the second quarter.
  • The Hornets forced a fumble on the first play of the Seawolves' ensuing drive and would rush in a 16-yard touchdown to take a 24-6 lead.
  • The Seawolves moved the ball on their next drive as they got a first-down rush from Hester and a reception by Keidan Gutierrez that pushed the ball to the Delaware State 24-yard line. Boyd would complete the drive with a 10-yard rushing touchdown, cutting their deficit to 24-13 with 5:57 left in the half.
  • Stony Brook held the Hornets to a punt with 3:08 remaining and started with the ball on their own nine-yard line. Sweitzer made a highlight-reel play on the sideline to advance the ball to the 45-yard line before the Seawolves were forced to punt with 1:19 left in the half.
  • Before the break, the Seawolves forced a fumble that gave them the ball and kept the 11-point deficit heading into halftime.
  • The Hornets got the ball first and went three-and-out to start the half following a sack by Bueno. Boyd and Gutierrez connected to the opposing 37-yard line to start their drive with another first down. Going for it on fourth-and-nine, Boyd's pass was incomplete to Sweitzer, giving the Hornets the ball back with 12:01 left in the third.
  • The Delaware State quarterback rushed for 45 yards on third down to put the ball on the Seawolves' side of the field before a 19-yard rushing touchdown that put the Hornets ahead 30-13.
  • Crawford took the ensuing touchback to the 34-yard line to start the drive for the Seawolves. A first-play reception from Sweitzer for 19 yards gave Stony Brook a first down and put the ball into Delaware State territory. On the next play, Boyd and Reshard connected for 12 yards that moved the chains. On fourth-and-seven, Boyd and Linkins connected for another 20 yards that put the Seawolves at the 15-yard line. Boyd finished the drive with a touchdown pass to Sweitzer, cutting the Hornets' lead to 31-20.
  • Delaware State responded with a 52-yard field goal to take a 34-20 lead with 3:39 left in the third quarter.
  • The Seawolves went down the field and scored on a four-yard run by CJ Hester to make the score 34-27 with 1:02 left in the third quarter.
  • The SBU defense came up with a crucial stop on fourth down at the Delaware State 32-yard line with a tackle from Calgaro and Bueno to give themselves the ball in favorable field position with less than 14 minutes left in the game.
  • Boyd led the offense to tie the game at 34-34 after a nine-yard passing touchdown to Gutierrez.
  • The kickoff unit for the Seawolves came up with a stop at the three-yard line to start the next Hornets drive with 11:17 remaining in the game. After a 30-yard rushing first down, Garcia came up with a four-yard tackle for loss to push the Hornets back. After a pass breakup by McGoy and another breakup by Garcia, the Hornets were forced to punt with 9:47 left in the fourth.
  • Stony Brook gave the Hornets the football back with 7:36 remaining after the team was forced to punt. The road team drove down the field and scored on a 16-yard rushing touchdown to take a 41-34 lead with 1:53 remaining.
  • Crawford gave the Seawolves the ball at the 38-yard line after his kick-off return from the previous touchdown. A few plays into the drive, Linkins and Boyd connected for 15 yards to put the ball into Delaware State territory at their 40 yard line. After a rush by Hester and Boyd, the team put themselves at their nine yard line with 20 seconds left. However, the Hornets forced an incomplete in the endzone as time expired to hold on to a 41-34 victory.
