Stony Brook Falls to NC State in Second Match of the Day

ORLANDO, Fla. - Following their five-set victory over Robert Morris in the opening game of the day, the Seawolves were unable to make it 2-0 as they were downed 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-15) by NC State in the Black and Gold Classic.

The Seawolves were led on offense by Ella Sanders with 12 kills, followed by Quinn Anderson with 10. Carey-Jean Block headed up the defense with 14 digs.

How It Happened

SET 1 | After falling into a 4-0 hole to start the day, the Seawolves rallied back four straight points of their own to set the stage for what would be a back-and-forth opening frame. Stony Brook would take its first lead when Anderson recorded back-to-back kills to make it 12-9. Numerous attack errors from the Wolfpack and multiple kills from Anderson and Sanders kept it close late into the set as the score remained tied at 22-22. In the end, though, NC State rallied off three straight to take the first set.

SET 2 | Despite another three kills from Sanders early on, Stony Brook found itself trailing 12-7 halfway through the second. A 3-0 run featuring the first kill of the season from Hanna Berkefelt briefly cut the lead down to two, before a kill and a block from Mopelola Ojo kept it close at 15-12 at the media timeout. This would be as close as it would get, however, as NC State ended the set on a 10-3 run.

SET 3 | The Seawolves fell behind early and were unable to fully get back into it. The closest they got came after a 4-1 run that saw four kills from Sanders cut the lead down to 11-9. Stony Brook would only manage four more kills the rest of the set as the Wolfpack went on to complete the sweep.

Notable Stats

  • Through two matches on Friday, Anderson finished with 24 kills while Sanders had 23 to pace the team.
  • Meanwhile, on defense, Block and Rayanne Wheat had 37 and 33 digs, respectively. Wheat also led the team with 38 assists on the day.
