Annapolis, Md. - Opening competition in their second non-conference tournament of the year, the Seawolves pulled off a stunning reverse sweep against Penn as they came back from a 0-2 deficit to win it 3-2 (21-25, 15-25, 25-18, 26-24, 16-14) on day one of the Kristen Dickmann Invitational, hosted by Navy.
Three Seawolves recorded double-digit kills today, led by Quinn Anderson with 18 and Ella Sanders and Damisi Osibodu with 10 each. The latter also paced the team with six blocks, while Carey-Jean Block was first in digs with 19.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The opening frame was one of the closest of the e afternoon as both squads stayed within five points of each other for the duration. Anderson provided the offensive spark early on, racking up four quick kills to keep the score tied 11-11. From there, however, a 4-0 Quakers run gave put them back in front. Despite multiple kills from Sanders and Avari Amstutz eventually making it a 22-21 game, Penn just managed to hold on to win the set.
SET 2 | After immediately coming out to a 2-0 lead, the Seawolves would spend the rest of set two playing catch up as the Penn offense quickly retook the lead and made it a five-point game at 11-6. A service error followed by a kill from Aajaylah Zeno did cut the deficit down to three, but the Quakers soon retook control of the court and ended the set on a 14-7 advantage.
SET 3 | Facing a potential sweep, Stony Brook was at its best in set three, again taking a 2-0 lead to kick things off, but this time managing to hold on to that lead for the entire set. Six different Seawolves recorded a kill through the first half of the frame, with Anderson and Osibodu each notching three to make it a 15-12 game at the media timeout. Out of the break, the Quakers briefly cut the lead down to one, but blocks from Mopelola Ojo and Osibodu helped swing momentum back in the Seawolves' favor as they went on to end the set on a 4-0 run bookend by kills from Anderson.
SET 4 | Stony Brook kept its momentum going into the fourth set as Lei Lasike promptly logged two kills and two blocks to make it 5-1. Lasike would later add another kill and block each to grow the lead to five at 16-11. Penn went on a tear in the second half of the set, though, going on a 9-3 run to take their first lead since the second at 20-19. Both teams would trade leads up to a 24-24 tie, at which point Anderson picked up her 16th kill of the day to give Stony Brook back the advantage and set up Ayanna Pierre Louis for the set-winning kill.
SET 5 | The match remained tight into the final set as both teams again found themselves all knotted up at 6-6. Though the Quakers scored three in a row to take the largest lead yet, kills from Sanders and Anderson made it a one-point game again at 10-9. Osibodu would then tie everything back up at 12-12 with back-to-back kills of her own, only for Penn to come right back and reach match point at 14-13. A Penn attack error tied it back up, however, before Rayanne Wheat made it match point Stony Brook with an ace. With one final kill on the day, Anderson managed to complete the reverse sweep for the Seawolves.
Notable Stats
- This is the first time in Osibodu's career that she has reached double-digit kills in a game.
- With her eighth kill of the game, Anderson reached 600 in her career.
- Taryn Su led the team today with a season-high 29 assists.
