On January 17, 2024, Stony Brook football and head coach Billy Cosh announced the hiring of Adam Lovan to the program.
In his first season on the Island, Lovan played a key role in one of the most dramatic turnarounds in the country. Helping guide a team projected to finish last in the CAA, he was instrumental in Stony Brook’s rise to an 8-4 overall record (5-3 CAA). The 2024 campaign marked the program’s first winning season since 2018, its highest national ranking in six years (No. 16), and a No. 24 finish in the final Stats Perform FCS regular season poll.
Under Lovan’s leadership, the offense saw significant gains — nearly doubling its scoring output from 15.2 points per game in 2023 to 29.6 in 2024. Total offensive yardage climbed from 314.2 to 403.9 yards per game, with passing production improving from 210.1 to 223.6 yards per game. The Seawolves set single-season program records for passing yards (2,858) and completion percentage (62.8%).
He also mentored quarterback Tyler Knoop into one of the most productive signal-callers in school history. Knoop set the program record for single-season completion percentage, ranked 11th all-time in single-season passing yards, and delivered a record-breaking six-touchdown performance at Towson on Oct. 19. He also recorded the third-most passing yards in a game in program history with 408 yards vs. Monmouth on Nov. 23.
Lovan was part of Cosh's offense at Western Michigan as a graduate assistant quarterbacks coach takes over as Stony Brook's quarterbacks coach and offensive recruiting coordinator. As a team last season, WMU was second in the MAC in passing offense (211.2), third in total offense (365.0) and average first downs (19.8) along with fifth in scoring (23.7) and offensive efficiency (123.3).
His prior coaching stops included as a graduate assistant at Arkansas State (2021-22), a volunteer assistant at VMI (2020-21), and an undergraduate assistant at Indiana (2017-19). At VMI, Lovan served as an offensive assistant working with assistant coach Patrick Ashford and the wide receivers group. During his time with the Hoosiers at Indiana, was a student assistant for two years working primarily with the wide receivers and helped run practices and aided in scouting.Â
He was a part of VMI's FCS Playoffs appearance in the 2020-21, working with the wide receivers and running backs, and coaching All-American wideout Jakob Herres. VMI put up at least 400 yards of total offense in six of eight games that season, including against No. 1 James Madison in the playoffs.

Lovan played two years at quarterback at Wabash College before transferring to Indiana University where he received a degree in public financial management in 2019.Â
