Mincey Headshot

Damian Mincey

Damian Mincey entered the 2025 season as Stony Brook’s running backs coach, bringing with him 21 years of coaching experience, a strong track record of player development, and a resume that includes 20 All-Conference selections and five players who have reached the NFL.

In his first season on Long Island with the Seawolves, Mincey helped Stony Brook continue its upward trajectory, finishing 6–6 overall with a 5–1 mark at LaValle Stadium, securing the program’s second consecutive .500-or-better season for the first time since the 2017–18 campaign. He played a key role in the development of the offense, helping guide running back Roland Dempster to finish second in the CAA in rushing touchdowns, rushing yards, and rushing attempts. Dempster concluded his collegiate career with 3,119 rushing yards, ranking top three in program history, while his 35 rushing touchdowns and 36 total touchdowns both rank second all-time. The offense totaled 911 plays, the second-most in the CAA, and averaged 143 rushing yards per game, which ranked among the top five in conference play.

Mincey spent the last three seasons (2022–24) at UMass, where he led the running backs room and helped elevate the team’s rushing attack. In 2024, the Minutemen totaled 1,962 rushing yards, scored 18 touchdowns, and averaged 4.1 yards per carry.

In 2023, he coached Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams to one of the most productive seasons in program history. Lynch-Adams ran for 1,157 yards and 12 touchdowns on 236 attempts, becoming just the second UMass player to reach 1,000 rushing yards in the FBS era. He earned First Team All-Independent honors from Phil Steele—one of five offensive players coached by Mincey to be recognized on the 2023 postseason list.

In his first season back at UMass in 2022, Mincey coached Ellis Merriweather to a Second Team All-Independent selection, and Merriweather later signed with the New Orleans Saints following the NFL Draft.

Prior to his time at UMass, Mincey served as the running backs coach and special teams coordinator at UAlbany from 2018 to 2021. There, he coached All-CAA standout Karl Mofor, who rushed for 1,290 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2019 en route to All-CAA First Team and FCS All-America honors. In 2021, Mofor again led the CAA with 115.0 rushing yards per game.

Mincey previously served as defensive coordinator at Pace University from 2015 to 2018, after one season as head coach of the CREC Colts in Connecticut (2014–15). He also coached at East Coast Prep (2013–14) and East Catholic High School (2012–13), serving in key defensive roles.

He began his collegiate coaching career at UMass from 2006 to 2011, holding multiple roles including assistant linebackers coach, linebackers coach, tight ends coach, and special teams assistant.

Mincey earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of New Haven in 2002, where he was a three-year starter for the Chargers.
