Lyle Hemphill enters his sixth season with Stony Brook and his fourth as the defensive coordinator. Hemphill also will work with the safeties.
Under Hemphill direction in 2015 Stony Brook fielded the FCS' top defense; leading the subdivision in both total defense (250.1 yards per game allowed) and 4.10 yards per play allowed. In fact, the Seawolves' 250-yard average was 17 ahead of the next best FCS outfit and was good enough to lead all of Division I.
Hemphill's unit allowed only 18 touchdowns over their 10-game season, tied for the third-fewest in FCS, and its 15.7 scoring average was in the top five nationally. Nine of Stony Brook's 10 opponents were held below 24 points and half scored less than 10 points.
For his efforts, Hemphill was named the 2015 FCS Defensive Coordintor of the Year by FootballScoop.
Including 2015 Hemphill has developed Stony Brook into one of the most proficient defensive units in FCS. In 2013, the Seawolves ranked 15th in total defense (325.4 ypg) and 18th in scoring defense (22.0 ppg) and in 2014 SBU ranked third in total defense (273.3 ypg) and fourth in scoring defense (15.3 ppg)
Under Hemphill's guidance, Cedrick Moore, Dominick Reyes, Davonte Anderson, Christian Ricard, Victor Ochi, Tyrice Beverette and Aaron Thompson each earned all-conference honors. Anderson became the Seawolves' Division I career leader in interceptions and Ochi is Stony Brook's career sacks leader.
Hemphill was named Stony Brook's secondary coach on May 2, 2011. Hemphill spent 2010 on the staff at Delaware, which advanced to the NCAA Division I National Championship game. The Delaware native worked with the Blue Hens' cornerbacks, including Anthony Bratton, an All-CAA safety who led the conference's defensive backs with 99 tackles.
No stranger to Long Island, Hemphill coached at Hofstra from 2006-09. During his time with the Pride, he worked with defensive backs and cornerbacks as well as serving as special teams coordinator. Hofstra ranked fourth in the nation in pass defense in 2008 and ranked second in the league in interceptions with 12 in 2007.
Prior to Hofstra, Hemphill was a graduate assistant with the Blue Hens. He began his coaching career at Delaware Valley College, where he worked with the defensive backs and was the Aggies' special teams coordinator.
A 2002 graduate of Ursinus College in Pennsylvania, he was a four-year letterwinner at strong safety and wrestled one season for the Bears. After graduating from college, he was a volunteer assistant wrestling coach at his alma mater, St. Elizabeth High School in Wilmington. His father, Joe, is one of the most successful football coaches in Delaware high school history.
Hemphill and his wife, Christen, have two children,Izabella and Lyla. The family lives in Port Jefferson
