Stony Brook Football announced on February 6 the hiring of Matthew Oehl as the Director of Player Personnel for Stony Brook University Football.
Oehl joined East Carolina University as the Director of Scouting for the Pirates football program in February 2024, marking his first year in the role. He played an integral part in helping ECU achieve a remarkable turnaround, improving from a 2-10 record in 2023 to an 8-5 finish in 2024. The Pirates closed the season strong, winning five of their final six games following a coaching change and secured a victory over NC State in the Go Victory Bowl.
In addition to the team success, Oehl contributed to the development and scouting of players who earned recognition throughout the season. Notably, Shavon Revel was selected 76th overall in the NFL Draft, while eight different ECU players earned All-AAC Conference honors.
Before coming to ECU, Oehl spent a season at Miami University of Ohio as the assistant director of scouting. There, he evaluated high school and transfer prospects, maintained organized recruiting boards, and collaborated closely with coaches and staff. His responsibilities also included advance scouting of upcoming opponents and aiding with recruiting events such as junior days and official visits.
Prior to Miami, Oehl served as a player personnel and recruiting intern at Wake Forest University during the 2022-23 season. He was involved in evaluating recruits, producing highlight reels, and managing player data to support the offensive recruiting team. Additionally, he contributed to prospect camps by organizing testing data and assisted the pro liaison in coordinating Pro Day communications with NFL personnel.
Oehl’s passion for scouting extends beyond collegiate programs. He is the founder of The Draft Academy, a social media platform dedicated to NFL prospect analysis. Through The Draft Academy, he conducted in-depth evaluations by watching game footage, combines, Pro Days, and all-star games like the Senior Bowl. He also created visual content and player grading systems to offer a comprehensive view of each prospect.
His analytical skills include detailed quarterback data tracking. Oehl developed a system to evaluate multiple data categories for elite QBs such as Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, and Will Levis during the 2022-23 seasons. His innovative approach includes measuring on-target percentages and ball placement scores to provide a nuanced assessment of quarterback performance.
A graduate of St. John’s University, Oehl earned a Bachelor of Science in sports management with a minor in business in 2020. As a four-year member of the Red Storm lacrosse team, he played attacker in 45 games, starting 15 times, and recorded 60 career points, including 10 goals and 50 assists. He scored his first collegiate goal against Drexel on March 18, 2017.
