Despite its best effort of the season, the Stony Brook Seawolves (0-3) fell to Brown University (1-0) in the first round of the Holiday Inn Express Volleyball tournament Friday night, 15-6, 11-15, 15-5, 15-5. In the first match of the night, Siena (1-4) spoiled the season opener for Quinnipiac (0-1), defeating the Braves, 15-10, 15-7, 15-4.
Brown took game one in convincing fashion, but its was the Seawolves who matched the Bears in game two, breaking an 8-8 tie with a 5-0 run. However, the Seawolves hit .000 in game three and never recovered from Brown's relentless offensive attack the rest of the match. The Bears held a 64-40 kills advantage in its season opener, led by freshman Diane Schneider's 19 kills.
Junior setter Corre Meyer collected 52 assists on the night. Defensively, Ceneca Calvert led four players in double-digit dig efforts with 18. Kim Highlund had 13 digs and Aneal Helms and Meyer had 10 apiece. Brown leads the all-time series between the two team, 2-0.
The Seawolves were led by Rachel Goldsmith's 14 kills, Alison Fields' 35 assists and Susanne Westing's 11 digs.
Amy Legendziewicz led Siena to a 15-10, 15-7, 15-4 over Quinnipiac with nine kills. Christina Baldwin had seven digs and five kills for the Saints, who won for the first time this season in five attempts.
