Albany Sweeps Seawolves In Doubleheader

April 1, 2000

Stony Brook, NY -- Steve Checksfield collected five RBI and Albany used just two pitchers on the day in sweeping Stony Brook, 13-7 and 7-4, in college baseball action Saturday afternoon. Albany (6-8-1) has now won five straight while the Seawolves (13-5) lost for the third time in seven games.

Albany jumped all over Stony Brook starter Mike Kinney (1-1) in game one, scoring eight runs before chasing him with just one out in the first inning. Ed Scott singled to open the game and Mike Grasso walked. Checksfield then hit a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to stake the Danes to a 3-0 lead. The Danes scored five more, highlighted by Mike Steinberg's single to center field that scored two and Ed Scott's double to right field that plated a run.

Stony Brook put four on the board in the second inning off winning pitcher Scott Tower, thanks to RBI singles from Joe Fernandez and Ed Murillo. Gregg Foster added a double later in the inning that scored the other two runs. Tower struck out six batters in getting the win, allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits.

In game two, Albany took a 5-1 lead after three innings of play and did not look back. Steve Lizza led off the second inning with a solo homerun and Jeff Rossiter doubled home Mike Kuebler. Rossiter came around to score when Jim Lovett reached on an error with two outs. Checksfield hit his second homerun of the doubleheader in the third inning, this time a two-run blast to left-center field. The Danes extended the lead to 7-1 as Rob Ryan scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and Chris Robilotti singled to right field, scoring Kuebler in the fifth.

The Great Danes capitalized on solid defensive plays, turning four double plays on the day and committing just one error. In the meantime, the Seawolves committed seven errors leading to five unearned runs.
