Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook Women's Soccer Season In Review

IT'S NOT HOW YOU START... but how you finish that counts. The Seawolves struggled through the first 11 games, but showed plenty of heart by fighting through the lean times to set a foundation for success to build on next year. After starting 0-9-2, the Seawolves roared to the finish line, winning six of their last eight. The two losses were by one goal, including a 3-2 overtime loss to Hofstra.

EIGHTH PLACE: The Seawolves 4-6-1 record in America East play gave them 13 points for the year which was good enough for eighth place in 2001. The Seawolves were picked 10th in the preseason poll and fell one win shy of earning a postseason berth.

CONFERENCE HONORS: Stony Brook's Brittany Norwood became the first player in the history of the program to earn All-Conference recognition when she was named to the Second-Team All-Conference on November 8. She was also named to the All-Rookie team. SB competed as an independent for the first 12 years at the Division I level.

MAC ATTACK: The Seawolves bid farewell to one of their most prolific scorers in 2001 in Kerri McCabe. In four seasons, she amassed 23 goals, 14 assists and seven game-winning goals which leaves her ranked among the best scorers in the history of the program. She will finish fifth all-time in goals scored, seventh in assists and fifth in scoring with 60 points.

SHE USES HER HEAD: A standout on defense for the past four years, Kristin Lynch started 70 games in that span, including a stretch where she started 53 of 55 games. She had 10 career goals, most coming on her specialty --- headers on corner kicks. She is a three-time Holiday Inn Express All-Tournament selection and has four game-winning goals to her credit. She recorded two multiple-goal games in her career, the latest coming on October 23 when she headed home two Kerri McCabe corner kicks to lift SB to a 2-1 victory over Columbia.

SPECIAL K: Junior forward Krisha Zagura turned in a strong season in 2001, amassing a team-high seven goals and one gamewinner. Zagura began her career with six goals in 1999 but scored only once last season which made her determined to bounce back in 2001. She did just that, scoring five goals over the last four games including two multiple-goal efforts against Drexel and Albany.

LISA, LISA: One of this year's co-captains, Lisa Mariano was a four-year starter at back and played in 64 games in that span, starting 58. She bounced back this season after suffering a knee injury last year that caused her to miss seven games. Despite missing seven games, she recorded a career high with seven points last season. She has scored six career goals, her first being a gamewinner against Fordham during her freshman season. In 1999, she earned team Most Valuable Player honors. A two-time Holiday Inn Express All-Tournament selection, she was also named to the Florida Atlantic All-Tournament team in 1999. She earned America East Honorable Mention Honors this season.

WOMAN IN THE MIDDLE: Junior midfielder Beth Arikian enjoyed her best season in a Seawolf uniform in 2001. She tallied five goals and two assists, finishing second on the team in scoring. Her three game-winning goals and 67 shots were both team bests. She scored three of her five goals off direct kicks. She also earned America East Honorable Mention honors this year.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF: Sophomore Jessica Enes suffered a knee injury which sidelined her during her senior year of high school. Determined to work her way back, Enes made her impact this season. She earned herself a spot in the starting lineup midway through the season and never left. She went on to score two goals and two assists on the year - both career highs. Her goal against Delaware was the gamewinner and gave SB its first victory of the season.

LEAVE IT TO GREENIE: Sarah Greenberg came on strong towards the end of the season. She finished with a goal and three assists on the year with all of her points coming over the final six games of the year.

FRESHMEN MAKE IMPACT: Rookie defender Maggie Haren started all 19 games at back this season, turning in a tremendous effort over the course of her first collegiate year . . . midfielder Leanna Yust appeared in 17 games as a defensive midfielder . She was slowed by a kidney infection late in the year . . . F Lea Kyle started the first seven games of the year before suffering an ankle injury that sidelined her for the rest of the season . . . forward Dana White appeared in 18 games and registered one assist . . . reserve midfielder Megan Healy appeared in three games in 2001.

EMILY DELIVERS: Junior Emily Snyder played a valuable role off the Seawolves bench this season. One of coach Ryan's top reserves, she notched a goal and an assist this season. Her tally was a spectacular 30-yard shot that found the upper right hand corner of the net in SB's 4-0 win over Northeastern.

WHOA NELLIE: Junior netminder Lori Nelson also enjoyed a late season surge along with the rest of the team. She recorded three shutouts over her last eight games and had a 1.25 GAA during that span. She now has 7.5 career shutouts.

FIGHTING BACK: Lauren Canino appeared in all 19 games this season despite having her gall bladder removed in mid-August. The sophomore forward notched two goals and one assist on the year.

NEWS AND NOTES: Kristin Baker appeared in all 19 games, tallying one goal . . .Jen Fontanetta appeared in four games, tallying her only goal of the year against Drexel . . . Stephanie Smyrl appeared in 11 games, registering her second career assist in the win versus Drexel . . .

EUROPEAN TRIP: Stony Brook made its first ever trip overseas in mid-August, foregoing its usual preseason training on campus for a European Tour that took the Seawolves to Holland, Germany and a brief stay in Belgium. The Seawolves played four games overseas, going 1-3. The team stayed for the first five days in the town of Valkenswaard, Holland before moving on to Worms, Germany for the remainder of the trip.
