Washington, D.C. -
Yale took advantage of Stony Brook's lackluster defense and poor shooting to hand the Seawolves an 82-62 defeat in the first round of the Red Auerbach Colonial Classic in Washington, D.C. Friday night. The loss drops the Seawolves to 0-3 while Yale improves to 2-2.
Following a D.J. Munir basket to give Stony Brook a 2-0 lead less than a minute into the game, Yale went on a 13-0 run to take control and never trailed from that point on. The Bulldogs shot 42 percent from three-point land in the first 20 minutes to build a 38-21 lead at the break. Conversely, the Seawolves shot only 25 percent from the field in the first half, 15 percent (2-13) from three-point range, and only 35 percent for the game.
Stony Brook mounted a comeback in the second half, sparked by Mike Konopka and Munir. Konopka was held scoreless through the first half, but scored 13 second-half points to keep the Seawolves close. Munir's three-pointer with 11:47 remaining drew the Seawolves within 47-40 but Yale's Mark Lovett scored the next five points to stave off the SB rally.
Munir finished with a game-high 19 points for Stony Brook. J.B. Bennett pitched in with nine points and eight boards while Mike Orfini netted eight points and seven rebounds.
The Seawolves will face the loser of the Binghamton/George Washington matchup in the consolation round of the Red Auerbach Colonial Classic tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
